I noticed that when I select several objects with various stroke and fill attributes, including some objects having stroke and/or fill turned off (not colour "none" but invisible), and I click Overprint Stroke (or Overprint Fill) in Attributes Panel, those objects with an invisible stroke become visible! Why is that? Is there a way to prevent it? In other words, I would like to set Overprint Stroke/Fill characteristics without affecting anything else, like visibility. This is for CS4.

I tried a couple of things with Graphic Styles and it doesn't work all the way. -Create type with Type Tool and type a few characters. Leave everything as default (black fill). -Add an extra red stroke to the type just created. Move the stroke from under Type to under Characters in Appearance Panel. -With that type selected, move it and drop it in Graphic Styles. -Now create a new type with Type Tool and type a few characters. Make its fill blue. -Apply the Graphic Style just created to this new type. This brings the red stroke to the type object but the character fill remains blue (the Graphic Style's character fill should be black)! If that's how Graphic Styles work, then it does not do the job for me.

rcraighead and meganchi. Thanks for your replies. I am aware of Graphic Styles but have been reluctant to using it, mainly because of the quirck you mention in that once you make a change to the Graphic Style, it does not propagate to the objects bearing that style. In order for changes to take effect, you have to create a new style and reapply it to the objects. It's kind of a half-baked style unlike styles in InDesign. I will play more with it and perhaps I can get over my inexperience with it. It is not quite logical that Characters cannot be selected evenly (only the highest level can be) in Appearance panel.

Hi, I have a type object to which I have added other things (extra fill, stroke, FX etc.). When I look at its appearance in the Appearance panel, I would like to get to the basic character's fill and stroke and set their properties. In the Appearance panel, under Type, I can do that by clicking on Characters. However, I have multiple instances of such type objects. If I select two such type objects at once and click on Characters in Appearance, it only makes live the properties for the last item I selected in the selection. Is there a way to access (select and modify) all of them at once? Thanks.

Hi Jacob, Thanks. I did mostly 3), and not just now but for the last several days! Your method seems to do the job though I will have to explore it more. It's wicked to use transparency only to get rid of it in the next step. I wonder why expand cannot do the same thing, since it also outlines strokes. Would you know what underlying mechanism flattening is using here that expand isn't?

By aligning the stroke to outside, the stroke itself (not its path) is not where the original image had its stroke (which was centred). Note that I had manually positioned the elements in the picture so they don't line up. Perhaps that led you to think the stroke was aligned to outside. I need the final result to be expanded for further processing. As described earlier, the clipping object (mask) is the rectangle and the clipped object is the line. My initial thought was that by simply expanding the clipped object as a whole, both container (rectangle) and the content (clipped line) would expand, but it does not work that way in Illustrator.

Hi Federico. Thanks for your input. But in CS4, I don't see Object>Paste in Back. Presumably, that's Edit>Paste in Back. By doing what you describe, the stroke in the final result is not in the same position as the original rectangle. Also, where in your method do you expand the object (clipping path and contents)?

Hi, This is for CS4. I thought this was a slam dunk but it doesn't work as I expected. I want to expand a clipped object and its contents. I would like the result to look exactly as the non-expanded clipped object, except that now the clipping path and the contents that were clipped have been expanded and are selectable. How can I do that? Here is a picture of what I'd like to do. The rectangle is the clipping path and the line is what is being clipped. I would like the expanded object (expanded rectangle and clipped line) to look exactly like the clipped object. Thanks.

Hi Ton. I appreciate that trick but I am not keen on such schemes because they change the design and then you have to keep track of these things and if there is something else in the way (like a red line), then you have to use another trick for that too and it gets out of hand. I am curious to identify the difference in Preflight for the this object between PDF 1.3 and PDF 1.4 because even though the result is different, I don't see a difference in Preflight.

I will have to double check if I must save in PDF 1.3. I need to flatten transparency. I just tried PDF 1.4 and it produces the desired output (as shown in the second example). Looking at Preflight for the yellow fill, I don't see any difference in the properties between PDF 1.3 and PDF 1.4. I don't understand why Knockout Group, in this case, is (or is it?) treated as transparency. Granted, Knockout Group is part of Opacity but here, I use it to avoid transparency!

Monika, meganchi. I have attached a picture with some explanation of the scenario I described in the first post. If you can, please also answer the three questions. I can see a workaround by expanding everything in the group and creating a compound shape but I would prefer something that preserves editing capabilities. Illustrator does what I want, it's the conversion to PDF that doesn't. Thanks. In the second and third examples, I forgot to mention that Objects 1 and 2 are set to overprint both stroke and fill (as applicable: Object 1 has only fills and Object 2 has only a stroke).

Hi maganchi. No, I am not saving as PDF X-4. However, I am setting Overprint to Preserve in the Overprints and Transparency Flattener Options (PDF 1.3). Basically, I want object #1 to "punch a hole" in object #2 and both objects #1 and #2 to overprint on the background, which is object #3. Effectively, for object #1, I would like object #2 to act as if it wasn't there, so that object #1 would virtually be sitting directly on the background (object #3).

Hi, This is for CS4. I have an object #1 with a fill (say a rectangle). Below that is object #2 with a stroke (say a straight line). #1 and #2 are grouped. Below all objects is object #3 which has a fill (say another rectangle) and that I am using as background. The group's Opacity is set to Normal 100% (default) but I enable the Knockout Group so #1 and #2 don't interact with each other. I then set the group's stroke and fill to overprint! Enabling Overprint Preview, #1 and #2 don't show through each other but the group overprints. This is expected. When I Save As Adobe PDF and view the PDF in Acrobat Output Preview with Simulate Overprint, the group is shown to overprint (as expected) but it appears that Knockout Group is discarded, so #1 and #2 show through each other. I encounter a similar problem with Isolate Blending. 1- Does Saving to Adobe PDF preserve Knockout Group and Isolate Blending when Overprint is enabled? Any help? 2- In Acrobat, Preflight, where can I see the settings that correspond to Knockout Group and Isolate Blending? Presumably, that would be in Graphic Properties for an object, under Transparency, but I don't see any field that corresponds. 3- In this context where the Opacity is set to Normal 100%, is enabling Knockout Group or Isolate Blending for this object processed as Transparency? There is a post, somewhat related here. Can you reproduce the problem in CS5 and CS6 too (assuming you have those)? Is there a workaround that would still allow me to place the .ai file? I have not found any, except for the two mentioned earlier (copy/paste and embed) which are not ideal. Yet another inconspicuous bug in Adobe software.

Sorry, I can't share the files then with these methods. Note that if I embed the placed file, the overprint settings take effect again and the two boxes on the left look just like the two boxes on the right!

Hi Ton. No, the problem is not solved. Attached is an image illustrating what is going on. On the left, two boxes, one with overprint set for fill and stroke, the other without overprint. The boxes on the left are part of the placed file. On the right, two boxes, one with overprint set for fill and stroke, the other without overprint. The boxes on the right are copy/pasted from Illustrator. Below everything is a simple blue background. With View>Overprint Preview enabled, you can clearly see that the placed file discards all overprint settings it contains. If overprint settings were honoured, the boxes on the left would look just like the boxes on the right. Even though it bears no significance, everything is on the same layer.

Hi, 1-Is there are way to insert a (horizontal) space between the left and right pages of a master spread? 2-Is there a way to create one master page for left page only and another master page for right page only, without any elements that lie outside the master pages to show on the opposite page? I have elements that go beyond the page and if I create a master spread, those elements step on the opposite page of the spread. However, I do not want the part of the elements that step outside the page to show. The same problem occurs if I create a one page master that I use for left page and another one page master that I use for right page. My preference is to deal with this in the master pages and not shuffle pages in the document. This is for CS4. Thanks.

No, that's not the issue in my case. The overprinting is just discarded altogether once the file is placed. So I have to copy the artwork (which has overprint settings) and paste it directly instead.

Hello, Is it possible to preserve overprint settings in a placed file (AI file placed into another AI file)? What I have tried so far discards overprint settings in the placed file. I find these issues with Illustrator unnerving. So much time is lost trying to understand if it is a user mistake, a bug, and if there is a workaround. It would be great for the user that Adobe releases an official list (periodically updated) of such known issues. This isn't a bug then, as it is "intentional", but a limitation of Illustrator. And by the sounds of what you are saying, it is still a limitation in the latest version of Adobe Illustrator. The point you make probably explains issue #2 and might also explain issue #1 but it doesn't explain why I can manually correct for issue #1 after the flip/flop operation!

You can do the most simple part. Draw a circle of width=4in, rotate it by 15 degrees (rotate+copy multiple times - select copy in rotate tool). Then inspect each copied circle. I see that not all circles have width=4in, some are 4.001in, 4.0007in, etc. This is issue #2. There is not even type on path here!

Hi Monika, I think your answer refers to issue #1. That being said, in the original post, I do mention that if I manually flip the type and then flip it back to its original position with respect to the path, that baseline shift goes away. So I still think it's a bug. Can you reproduce that in CC? Can you reproduce issue #2 in CC? I don't think that simply rotating a circle with type on it, despite Bezier curves, should affect the dimensions of the circle.

There is one more issue that occurs here and I will outline both here, so you can try to reproduce them. Again, this is in CS4. Draw a circle, say of width=4in. Type a character on the path. Centre it at the top of the circle (90 degrees). Look at the line that outlines the baseline and how it sits flush with the circle. Then Transform>Rotate (copy) every 15 degrees. You might observe the following. 1- In some rotated copies, the baseline is no longer flush with the circle. It may be very slightly above or below the circle. You must zoom in a lot to see that. It doesn't happen for every copy. This is the issue I described in the original post. 2- For each copy, read the w and h. You will see that some are no longer w=4in but slightly off, say 4.0011in. Both of these issues look like an Illustrator bug to me.
