On a completely different forum on the same subject Jarle Leirpoll weighed in, insightful as usual... Jarle Leirpoll: "I wish this was possible. But how do you propose that this would work when you have dual mono clips and change to stereo and vice versa? What would happen to clips in the timeline?" Ed Torr: • From Mono to Stereo, 5.1, or Adaptive: Timeline clips transform in place. • From Stereo to 1-Track Mono: Timeline clips transform in place. • From Stereo to 2-track Mono: More disruptive. Editor is given two choices a) 1-Track only: Timeline Clips transform in place to Track 1 audio only, Track 2 does not arrive. User cleans up. b) 2nd Track added: Additional empty sequence track generated, all Track 2s are placed there, parallel to Track 1. Not 100% clean but easy to systematically spot and adjust. • For 5.1 or Adaptive to 1 or more tracks, follow the same scheme as above. Jarle Leirpoll: I would kill myself if I accidentally changed lots of 5.1 sources to mono, adding lots of extra clutter, clips or tracks in the timeline. The latter would mess with my shortcuts for track patching. But if the warning is big enough, I might catch it. Ed Torr: Following standard app logic, though, you could either 'undo' the 'damage', assuming you're within your undo max, or reverse it by running the command again to restore back. (the latter could leave emptied audio tracks) A global change of this nature could be either a convenience or a mess. It would just depend on your workflow and project particulars. More important, once you introduce the option source side (remember, an option -- you could still choose to run the command as it currently functions), it would also be available to you sequence side, where you could apply the change on an instance-by-instance basis -- again, a welcome convenience or exhausting burden, depending on your workflow and project/sequence particulars. Currently the lack of the option leaves you with the burden of having to manually make it happen -- make the the change source side, stare with a forlorn frown at the popup alert, then replace a bunch of mono instances with stereo. Having just done just that for 48 timeline instances, I can say with some conviction the ability to have addressed this either source side (globally) or sequence side (select the 4 instances per sequence and transform in place) would have been most welcome.
