Wow. I thought they pulled those long ago. Not that they're going to do too many people any good. With activation servers getting cut off and no resets anymore, those old versions are getting very long in the tooth.

Not only that but downloading old perpetual versions hasn't been possible in many years.

There is no way to get those old versions and in this case, it won't do you any good anyway.
CS6 was the last InDesign version that could open PM files and that was limited to PM6 or later. An additional complication is that in order to open the PM5 file in PM 6, 6.5 or 7 you would have to open it on the same platform it was created on.
That means if it was Mac file (and without a file extension, I would guess that to be the case) you're going to have to find someone with a very old Mac that has PM 6 or later installed.

Well, if they look good in Acrobat, that's it. Best you can do without completely dumbing down the PDF which will likely result in a lot of stitching artifacts.

Panel problems are generally caused by corrupt preferences. Try resetting them.

I placed that artboard directly into InDesign and it's fine. Whatever is happening to you, I'm not seeing it.

Are you absolutely sure there's no background in the PDF? I've seen this before and had to open the file in Acrobat or Illustrator and remove it manually.

If you're replying by email, you cannot attach files. You need to come back to the web community and attach them here.

Where are taking these screenshots? And again, how are you viewing the PDFs? Do they look good in Acrobat?

Without an extension? How do you know it's an InDesign file? Have you tried to add the INDD extension?
What happens when you try? Do you get an error message? If so, what is it?

You've told us nothing about the method you used for creating the PDFs so that's the first thing we need. Is it a blend mode? Is it an opacity? Both?
And, how are you viewing the PDF? Beyond Acrobat/Reader on a desktop, viewing complex PDFs is nothing but a crapshoot.

Can you highlight the text that is getting messed up in the export and show the character panel while it's highlighted?

They are all in preview mode! We need frame edges, hidden characters and any text highlighting for missing fonts/glyphs. With nothing selected, hit the w key to get out of preview mode.

You have two choices. A new computer or new software.
Your computer is well over 10 years old and you're going to have to replace it eventually.

PDF forms are still important for many people/companies, but I forgot about bookmarks and hyperlinks. Those are important "interactive" features too.

Of course, but again for specialized use. There are too many other ways of doing it that are more efficient for creation and user friendliness.
Many of the issues we see reported are from people that are having issues with them in browsers or on mobile devices.

Buttons in PDF are simply a bad idea that barely work right in Acrobat. The more you have the worse it gets. Use hyperlinks instead and for your own sanity don't compare Publish Online to PDF. They are completely different.

If you truly believe that then I'm afraid you know very little about typesetting and design. Why you felt the need to revive a 6-month old conversation, I don't know, but what I do know is that you're not going to find a lot of people that agree with you.
As already pointed out, it's a simple one click process to turn them off for all new documents. You can also kill them in your paragraph and character styles.
