Acrobat's combine feature to merge files into one PDF does not provide a page size "editor". Likely a cleaner work flow if the input files had page size adjusted by their native application. Once done, use combine to merge into the single PDF. You may find this is (over all) easier than using the Crop Tool resize features. There is an "underline" annotation available for the Comment & Markup toolbar. First, open the Comment & Markup toolbar. This will let you observe the addition of the Underline annotation. You want to access the "More Tools" dialog. There are various ways to get to it. --|  Place the mouse cursor in the tools icon 'ribbon' over in the empty space at the right.      Right click for the context menu.  Select "More Tools". --| Select Tools > Customize Toolbars With the More Tools dialog presented, scroll down some to view the 'Comment & Markup Toolbar' choices. If you have Acrobat Standard or Professional installed Adobe PDFMaker is available. Use it to convert the Word file to PDF. As there are specific "bands of compatibility" vis-a-vis an Office release and an Acrobat release you do want to ensure that the version of Acrobat used is compatible with the version of Office installed. Properly configured (via the settings under the different tabs in the dialog) , Adobe PDFMaker will convert the Word file to a Tagged output PDF with the active links. Tagged output PDF is needed for PDF ebooks that are to be used on eReaders as this facility is what supports reflow (needed for the smaller screen size, eh). Nor can an image reflow to fit an eReader's screen or the screen of a portable device. Provided you author content in an application that has tag management you can output a Tagged PDF. Hi, While the iPad is sure to make a splash I'd not count on it to become the overwhelming market share leader. ePub, the open standard, is the "tide", as it were. Closed system approaches (Kindle/iPad) are the waves (alibet, large at times). With that said & noting that my opinion and several dollars will get you some coffee at Starbucks, I'd suggest that you look at providing eBooks to Kindle and Sony eBook readers first. Having InDesign, you can publish output for Kindle almost immediately. Keep in mind that, in North America, Kindle has the dominant market share; this makes eBooks for Kindle a "bird in hand". iPad is the "bird in the bush" just now. Obtain Calibre. Become comfortable with the work flow. Then publish for Kindle. Next, look over the formats supported by Sony's eBook reader. Let things settle out with the iPad. Look closely at what Apple will/will not support. How "captive" will you be if you go for whatever the iPad market *might* be. While I'm not looking to get into the "publishing biz" I do have an interest in how to share topics I'm interested in with others and eBooks is, clearly, an excellent venue. To date, it looks to me that Sony is the most versatile (format support), Kindle is widely used/supported and getting into Kindle format is not so hard (via InDesign/Calibre), and iPad is still an unknown (marketing talk has little meaning - run time has meaning). Again, what is significant about the Sony (and others) is the support for ePub. A final observation. If not already done, consider getting yourself in the current CS4 applications (with, of course consequence updates). The most current InDesign release is much better for support of eBook publishing. As scanned text content is generally US letter page size or EU A4 page size the resulting image (that is parked in PDF) is, essentially, just another "graphic". Even if "two pages" are processed to give a "one page" output - still have a large virtual page size. If your audience is using eBook readers this poses a problem as graphics/images do not reflow to fit the smaller screen. Even more of an issue with mobile devices. Depending on what the particular eBook reader can or cannot do with a PDF would dictate the usefulness of OCR. If you audience is using a computer the the page size is not an issue. However, without OCR of the image's text, one cannot do a "Find" or "Search". Not being able to use Find or (using an embedded index or Catalog index) use Search means when the user wants to go to something in particular in the PDF they cannot. This becomes an annoyance quickly. Size reduction (image compression). For images you have CCIT, ZIP, JPEG, JPEG 2000, etc. Problem is that the only way to *seriously* reduce the size of an image/graphic is by destructive removal of pixels. For an image of text this is a body blow -- can make the picture of the text unusable quickly. Hi Marianna, For any OCR, 300 ppi is generally used to give a good balance between OCR accuracy and file size. While 400 ppi or even 600 ppi can yield somewhat more accuracy of OCR, the file size can get large. Optimizing the PDF, to reduce file size, typically results in destructive remove of image pixels. This degrades the visual quality of the image. As you drop below 300 ppi OCR accuracy falls off dramatically. Because you mentioned "searchable" in context of OCR and not smooth letters it sounds like the source paper scanned was not of good quality or the scanner needed a clean and inspect. Neither "Searchable Image" nor "Searchable Image (Exact)" affect the existing scanned image (unless down sampling is used - which destructively removes pixels). I mention this because you do not "see" the OCR output from either of these OCR methods. OCR from Searchable Image or Searchable Image (Exact) adds a layer of hidden text to the PDF page. It is not part of the PDF page content (which is the scanned image). ClearScan uses A custom Adobe Font to replace the image's characters while leaving a low resolution copy of the image in the background. With ClearScan, you can edit "suspect" words. Those "suspects", if not edited remain as a bit mapped image. Note that sometimes, some characters' scanned image cannot be processed by OCR. Typically, these are not provided to you as "suspects" by ClearScan and remain in the PDF page content as a bit mapped image. If you want to edit the ClearScan OCR output later you can. First, you must change the PDF page content (ClearScan output) to a different font, one that is installed on your system and is not "locked" by license restrictions. Something else that is good to know and may be useful at some time is that Acrobat 9's Preflights have a Fixup that will embed OCR output's "hidden text". A Batch Sequence could be built around this. Something else to configure when bringing TIFF (or any supported file format) into PDF via Acrobat. Go into Preferences. Select the "create PDF" category. Look for the file format in the window showing file formats. Select it. Often, there is an "Edit" button. You have hardware and software adequate to the task of developing scanned images that will end up in PDF and post processing the PDF(s) into functionally interactive documents / document collections. Acrobat's OCR can provide searchable text (presuming the hardcopy text was from a word processor/text editor - usable OCR of handwritten text is possible with dedicate software ($), but not Acrobat OCR). If the OCR option for Formated Text & Graphics or ClearScan (AA9) is used, the user can perform edits to suspect OCR output. Having used Acrobat 5.x (full) for similar activities in the past I know it is capable of supporting the creation of interactive PDF collections containing scanned content. However, "fully editable" is a no show in PDF as PDF is a page description language and not a word processor/text editor format. Particularly so when dealing with OCR output in a PDF. Even  Section 508 accessible, tagged output PDF produced from Adobe applications or MS Office applications is not "fully editable". ~ some observations ~ If you've not already done so, play with Acrobat 5's Optimization Options for Acrobat Scan. Effectively, these are the same from AA4.x through AA9pExtd. Avoid the default "Automatic" selection. Avoid "Automatic" & "Aggressive" Avoid "Adaptive" for Color/Grayscale.
