I believe that command + spacebar is supposed to give access to the zoom tool when one has another tool active. However, on my Mac command + spacebar produces "Spotlight Search". Is there another option?

Here is the inspiration: I want to crop a large number of photos into a kind of a "mod daisy" shape. I guess I'm probably using "crop" incorrectly, because as I understand it, PS will only make square or rectangular images. But inside that square or rectangle I want just the "daisy shape" of pixels, with the negative space transparent. So maybe it is a mask? My original photos are all different sizes, and I'd like the option of moving the daisy frame around in order to find the best portion of the image to apply it to.

Meet the male Great Argus, a pheasant-like bird native to Asia: This is a piece of stock photography that comes in this size. I need a different crop - landscape, not portrait format. How can I best replicate the area in the left to extend it out 3X wider than it is now? I need to stretch the right side, too, and I think the background that is there now is going to be problematic. So, once I've got the left side figured out, can I copy it to the right side to replace what is there?

There are at least 3 different ways to set up columns: draw out one large text frame and use the text frame options, set them up on the master page, or set them up on the individual page using "Layout". My document is consistent all the way throughout - 4 columns of equal width on each page. Which of these options should I employ?

I'm working on an illustrated dictionary. My pages are set up with 4 columns, 88pt wide. I have multiple small photos (jpegs) placed on each page. They are inline objects, and they all have the same object style. Can I edit that object style or do something else to center the images vertically in the column? Right now they are flush left.

I have a "rule above" set for one of my paragraph styles. I checked "keep in frame". However: what I really want is no paragraph rule at all when the paragraph is at the start of a page or column. Is that possible?

Here's a screenshot of what I would call an "incomplete" background: after cropping to get the right proportions there are some areas that are transparent. What would be the quickest way to fix that so that the background is all one color - perhaps even not white? I know I could select the central image and move it into a new file that has the background I want, but I'm wondering what other ways there are to accomplish the same end result.

I need some round photos. I'm creating them by using the elliptical marquee to select the area I want from rectangular photos. Usually that means drawing out the circle then moving it around a bit to find the framing I like the best. Can I change the size of that selection after I've released the mouse?

Since some of the images are isolated on a white background, would I gain anything by making that a transparent background, then placing the psd fill in InDesign and asking it to honor transparency? I am not currently sharpening the image before output. Would you?

CC on a Mac I am embarking on my a photo-heavy book design project and would like to get advice about workflow. An image of a page is shown below. The originals are jpegs, and there may be a few hundred of them by the time I am finished. At present each one is on my harddrive in a single folder in 3 iterations: the original, the psd file, and the final version, output as a jpeg. I'm linking to the final jpegs from InDesign. They are all being used at the same width, with varying heights. As you can see, they are quite small - just 88pts wide. At present I am outputting the final jpegs at around 125pts, 300 dpi. The layout might change, which might mean I want to use them a little larger than shown below. Any advice?

CC on a Mac. I'm having a little problem that is making me crazy. Why can't I close up the distance between the photos and captions in the attached? They act as if they are snapping to a grid, even though I have "align to none" chosen in the caption paragraph style. The images are set to text wrap, with no offset above and below; the captions are part of the flowing story (i.e. not in separate text boxes attached to the photos). The "space above" for the paragraph style applied to the captions is zero; likewise, the "space below" for the paragraph style applied to the text before the image/captions is also set to zero.

I have a large quantity of text in an Excel spreadsheet, lightly formated (underlining and italics of certain words). I want to turn it into text, then place it into an InDesign document (as a "story", not as a table. What is the best way to do this? I tried exporting to a .csv file and then opening and saving it as a Word document, but in the process I lost the formatting.

I'm working on an illustrated dictionary. There will be a few thousand entries, and a few thousand graphics. Attached is a draft. This required fairly heroic amounts of tweaking to get the swatches to all line up correctly with the appropriate bit of text. By "tweaking", I mean adjusting the space before and after each paragraph, 1 point at a time. If anyone has any ideas about how I could improve the design and the process, I'd love to hear them. But for now, my specific question is: how to get the images to flow along with the text?

CC on a Mac. I want to add rules above paragraphs. I know how to do that using "paragraph rules" in paragraph styles. However: I don't really care for the options that are available. Can I add some lines/shapes of my own design to the list of choices under "types"?
