This is still happening on 24.4.1. Adobe, what are we doing here?

Glad to see you’re working on it, thank you. I can’t upgrade to beta software in the middle of delivering shots, so I’ll stick with my downgrade.

This was mission-critical for us, so I rolled back to the last working version. Pretty crazy this hasn't been patched yet.

Yes, you can do this in AE with Element 3D. - Make two solids and put a Gradient Ramp on each. - Set top solid to Add blending mode. - For the top layer, the gradient ramp goes left to right and is the red channel. - For the bottom layer, it goes top to bottom, this is the green channel. - The blue channel doesn't matter, as long as its consistently set to either 0 or 1. - Add Expressions as pictured below. - Precomp this, I call it STMAP. - Add Element 3D to a solid, Add STMAP as a Custom texture map - In E3D, add 3D model. Add STMAP to the Illumination channel. Turn off other channels. - Back to AE, in the E3D plugin settings turn off all lighting, so it's just the self illumination. - Unwrap using RE: Map Inverse UV and RE: Map plugins.

This is so incredibly dumb. I need the dates on my renders to match when I rendered them in real life. Adobe, fix this please, you're creating an organizational shitshow for us.

If you figure out a hacky fix, like adding something to the commandline prompt or using a previous version of AE Render, that would helpful, because not being to background render on this job is a problem. Thanks!

Agreed, they're not going to update RG. Id still like AE to be compatible with aerender.exe. This isnt a RG bug, really. Do you render in the BG with Media Encoder? Can you throttle down tbe amount of cores it uses?

Yeah, I know, but it’s what I use to render in the background while I’m working.

AERender.exe says WARNING:After Effects warning: After Effects is unable to fetch an OCIO Configuration as the file is not recognized (ACES 1.3 Studio v1.0). This project will be switched to Adobe color management. 😞

I have an After Effects script with the same problem. Uninstalling and Installing again didn't work, but I chose to keep my preferences. I guess I'll have to try again, and kill them off. 😞

Is there a way to set up a custom ocio config and the OCIO Look Transform effect so that it automatically pulls the correct CDL, depending on the name of the comp? Or the name of the file? There has to be some way to automate adding the CDL. https://opencolorio.readthedocs.io/en/latest/guides/authoring/overview.html

Echoing the need for 32-bit grain. I use an animation preset with Sapphire S_Grain that lets me control amplitude and frequency of each color channel, which should be built into AE (please.)

I’d be happy to give it a try if you have a plate and an stmap. You could share a Dropbox folder link or something. I think it would work because the effect is referencing the footage layer and not the comp.

I’ve never done this, I use RE: Map for a different workflow, but I think the way you do it is to increase the comp size to hold the entire undistorted image. After redistorting, you’d precomp the whole thing, and that precomp (at the higher resolution) would be put in a comp of the correct size.

I use BCC Light Wrap and for Edge Blur I now use a saved custom preset for Roughen Edges, where you set it to Spiky and lower Edge Sharpness and Fractal Influence to 0.

I think I answered my own question, and maybe yours: "-mfr mfr_flag max_cpu_percent" where mfr_flag ("ON"|"OFF") specifies if Multi-Frame Rendering should be used, and max_cpu_percent (1-100) specifies the desired maximum CPU percentage power to use during rendering. Because Multi-Frame Rendering has the ability to use 100 percent of your CPU's capability, you may choose to limit the CPU power so other applications can be used. max_cpu_percent will be ignored when the mfr_flag is set to "OFF" https://helpx.adobe.com/after-effects/using/automated-rendering-network-rendering.html

I'm sorry, this doesn't answer your question, but-- do you know if there's a flag in the command line that disables MFR on purpose?

You can do it with other formats. I didn't look into the color space part, as we handle color management with OCIO & LUTs on adjustment layers.

Automatically Import OpenEXR with Preserve RGB checked: You can automatically set EXR files to always import with "Preserve RGB" on. - Navigate to your Preferences: for example C:\Users\Eric\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\After Effects\23.4 - Open "Interpretation Rules.txt" - Find "OpenEXR" - Change the line below it to: *, *, *, "oEXR", * = *, *, *, P, "pRGB", *

It's crazy that you can't access this via scripting. What you can do is edit the Interpretation Rules.txt to set a file type (like EXRs) to always import Preserve RGB.

This is a huge issue for me, my company, and the compositors we hire. We're comping on a pretty maxed out Ryzen 5800X, 3090, 128GB RAM, NVME storage. We have tried to kill off every bottleneck. But if we get a job with EXRs over UHD, the work drags to a halt. I have 200 4400x2200 shots to get through, and it's a slog. If this were Nuke or Fusion, we'd be fine. We had 6.5k plates earlier this year, and I wanted to cry, it was like quicksand. Our small community of senior-level AE compositors are always talking about switching to Nuke for this and other related reasons. I get that AE is more focused on serving the mograph artists, but I really want to keep comping in AE. It's hard for me to believe, but I've put 20 years into this software. I'm incredibly fast at what I do, and I don't want to have to go back to Baby Steps in Nuke for $10k/year or whatever it is. The OCIO support has been terrific. Let's get these EXRs reading and writing at top speed! Please!

Matt, I'm a veteran compositor who also uses After Effects, and I've been dragging my feet about switching to Nuke for years. I also need an Edge Blur plugin that works in 32-bit color with MFR. I'm probably going to look for a plugin developer in the next few weeks, and see how much it would be to have them write it. There aren't many of us AE compers left. I'd love to see your work.
