apologies for the time lag! the previous version would have been fine. I ended up downloading 2024 (don't ask) and it's perfect. (BTW the tool I could not find was "Magic Wand." It wasn't on the tip of my tongue because I've been using PSD for 30 years, and work withoiut thinking about the names of tools. Very odd how it disapeared, and I couldn't select and feather the selection edges. But very happy with a dated version. It is perfect for the work I do these days.

This update is insanely confusing. I do not know where to find the old selection tool - that when you touched an object it was surrounded by selection "dashes." I think I may have inadvertantly lost it somewhere. What I have now is a "quick" selection tool that does not make visible dashes around it when the object is touched by this tool. So they can't be feathered. There is also an object selection tool that won't select the object I want on the layer that I am trying to select. It decides what the object is. Why in God's name did I upgrade? Any clear easy to read and follow comments will be most welcome. This is not the only problem. I think they created a "smart" photoshop, rather than one that is usable by humans.

Once again, thanks so much to everyone. I learned a lot from you. Two things: 1. This may be an apple issue. I noticed new type in text docs was also coming up grey. 2. What works somewhat in PSD, now is using the color picker that appears at the top of the frame next to type (see screenshot). When I open a new file, type still frequently comes in grey, but when I change that color picker, type will stay black for the duration of working in that file. The screenshot shows the location of that color picker.

Photoshop! I'll probably have to resume this later. Am working with client now. You've probably given outstanding help I'll just have to figure it all out. Adobe used to make it simple to resolve problems like this. It is sad that everything has gotten so complicated. All they concentrate on is marketing! Your advice has been excellent, and I'll try and sort it out when I have a chance!

Thanks! Unfortunately, I was not prompted to delete anything. Although the page packed with previous snapshot photoshop files (lightroom library?) is empty. I can't access the library that you suggest, doing a simple Command F. Please understand you are dealing with a 'tard, and give a bit more direction on reaching this CS settings folder, so I can trash it. (It would be interesting to find out exactly why PSD picked this time to suddenly glitch.)

Thanks for getting back quickly! Photoshop is becoming more and more glitchy. Nearly every time I use it a new bug pops up. I didn't reset prefs because a ton of past glitches will pop back in to reset. I hate to think about the new hells that await with newer versions. I will definitely go on and take your suggestion if necessary. Thank you again.

Somebody please help! I stupidly installed Big Sur 11.6 yesterday on my IMac. Now the photoshop work page is so huge that the bottom goes FAR off screen, so I cannot reach "Layers."

I click on the layer I want to move, but the move tool moves layers underneath that layer. Please tell me what to do. I've forgotten, and cannot fathom why Adobe hasn't fixed this.

I finally managed to get it updated. The old 2020 PSD is still on the hard drive, though. Should I trash 2020? If so, will trashing the psd folder in the apps folder be sufficient, or are there other things that should also go. Thanks so much. My printer still doesn't function, so guess I need to update the driver. Unfortunately, this printer only goes to Catalina. If you hear a loud pop, it's just me blowing my brains out.

It seems like this used to be simple. You just hit automate to pdf, select your images and you had it. With the fancy upgrades, it all seems so confucingly impossible. Maybe I'm getting too old for this. Any help appreciated.
