@Printdevil , You stated " This problem also prevents me from opening several RAW files as one layered Ps file, which is something I do quite often, so this issue is really affecting my workflow."
I am not sure what you do to achieve this a far as I am aware LrC does not work with layers. Please explain how you open several raw files to Ps as layers? Do you do this directly with Ps?
Ok I see there is an option available in the edit in option in LrC to " open multiple images as layers in Ps". What happens if you choose that option do you get an error message?

@jonathan_freeman , you stated " It appears that the Library path on my LrC catalgues and backups has now moved to to the folder in my one drive account on my PC's C Drive, and is no longer set to link to my normal catalogue which still also exists on the normal folder on my C Drive."
This is likely the source of your problem, it's likely your Catalog file has become corrupted.

It's as Johan indicates, there is an option in Lightroom Classic to "Automatically write Metadata to XMP" , LrC does not automatically read info from the file except at initial import when there is an XMP file present.

Better to use one main Catalog and manage the images in Collections instead of creating additional Catalogs.
See the link for a video tutorial.

@backyardprod , you stated, " I have multiple catalogs, but for different things. So processed stock photos are in one, scanned photos in another, and my main catalog holds all the original photos and any processed copies (from Photoshop, say). This is the main one that I work on every day. The original images are only imported into this one."
Catalogs are data based files and only store information about the location of the images on your computer system and edits and you other work you do. So the images are imported to the Catalog not into the Catalog. The Catalog does not have image files or copies of image files.
Images files can be in a particular disk drive in a specific folder and be imported to multiple Catalogs.

@backyardprod , I have looked at the thread and notice you are working with multiple Catalogs, this can present multiple challenges.
I have a couple of questions,
1. Do you use the option to " Automatically write Metadata to XMP" selected? This option is a Catalog specific setting do you use this setting in all the Catalogs?
2, Are there original images imported to several Catalogs?
3. When syncing Metadata to several images do you use the Sync option or the Auto Sync option?

Over 90 % of the images in my LrC Catalog are original RAW images from digital Cameras. I do not use DNG files in my normal workflow and I do not Automatically write Metadata to XMP.
I just used the Copy as DNG at import as a reason why Adobe does not retain the original raw image name in the DNG file created during the Denoise process. LrC does not change the original imported files when editing.

@ExUSA , Ok , so there are lots of users who use the Copy as DNG at import to LrC ( its an option Adobe have recommended for many years) the file is a raw DNG and users can apply the Denoise feature to the DNG image they will also get another image that will have the (-Enhanced-NR.dng. This new image will sit in the same folder as the RAW DNG it's required since the Computer OS will not allow filed with the same name and will require a change to the name.
After you do Denoise you will have two Image files the Original file and a new Denoised image file.

@ExUSA , I agree with @johnrellis, post see the screen capture from my Windows system. I am using LrC 14.2.
Screen clip.
Note
Original file name (created when Denoise was done) P3054344-241-Enhanced-NR.dng.
Original Raw Filename (as imported into LrC extension of 241 added) P3054344-241-ORF.
Preserved File Name (as created in the camera) P3054344.ORF.

@ZimFromIRK , the Pause button in the identity plate will only appear if you have "Automatically write metadata to XMP" selected in the Catalog settings.
Note XMP is only Written to XMP it is not automatically read.
LrC will read XMP if available on import of images or you can use the menu option in the Library module Metadata > read metadata from files.
See the link below for help with writing metadata to XMP in Lightroom Classic.

When LrC is open it creates a .lock (LOCK) file next to the Catalog file which has an extention .lrcat (LRCAT) the lock file with the same name as the Catalog ending with the extention .lrcat.lock.
When you close the LrC application the LOCK file will be automatically deleted, however if the LrC application is closed unexpectedly e.g. loss of power the LOCK file will remain in place and prevent the Catalog from being opened and cause the error you are experiencing. Go to the folder which containes the Catalog file and if there is a LOCK file is present delete the file (do not delete the Catalog file ending ,lrcat).

I have my own personal view of this issue.
The Adobe Photography plan is Photoshop which includes Bridge, Adobe Camera Raw.
It also includes Lightroom Classic which is an alternative to Bridge and Adobe Camera Raw so you can make your choice to include either one in your workflow.
Also included is the Creative Cloud ego-system Lr desktop and Lr Mobile.
My choice is to use LrC as my option to work with my RAW image and use the default option which is not to select "Automatically write metadata to XMP" and I do not use the manual option to save info to the files, so I know the info is in the Catalog.
If I wish to utilize Adobe Camera Raw I would select the images outside LrC an use Bridge/ PS to open the image/s which will open the images in ACR where you can do your edits then complete your work and save to a tiff. This leaves your LrC work secure.
