It will be that Premiere CS 5.5 goes to surpass the Edius when to edit AVCHD and to give play in timeline.

Having turned into a PrPro vs FCP thread, the Lounge is a better place for this, where there is something to whet your whistle between posts, and  nourishment in the form of that green stuff to keep you on top of your  game.

I've been busy at NAB, and I just got back to the forum now for the first time in a week. I see that folks have pointed to some of my posts already, but I want to get them all in one place for convenience:

Here are the details of what's new and changed for Premiere Pro CS5.5.

Here are the details of what's new and changed for After Effects CS5.5.

Here are the details of what's new and changed for Adobe Media Encoder CS5.5.

Also, Audition CS5.5 is in the suite. No more Soundbooth.

If you go to these posts and then follow the links in them for more details, I think that all of your questions about the details of the new and changed features will be answered. If not, let me know, and I'll answer them.

Good addition!

Now, if only you could get sober, after a week in "sin city."

When you get a moment, please do not hesitate to share some of the neat stuff from NAB, that might be out of the Adobe realm. I have yet to talk to my producer buddies, who went, but most did so, just to dine at Joël Robuchon's, or Guy Savoy's, and seldom have much to offer, beyond reflections on the company's expensed wine list... Getting the poop from a real technical person might be interesting. Surely you saw something beyond the Adobe booth?

Glad to have you back,

Hunt

PS - @ Jerry.K, good call - off to The Lounge! [Then Todd can offer a NAB overview, and feel comfortable.]

I know this is a bit OT, but this is a good place for it. Anyone notice the excitement about FCP-X? Especially the ability to.... edit Natively! No transcoding! They are so excited... I asked the question.. What happened to all the fcp guys that told us for nearly two years now that transcoding was no big deal, and that they prefer to transcode to prorez. Hmm.. maybe those poeple were kidnapped? Anyway, from the looks of it, Adobe don't have to worry. CS5.5 looks awesome, and I'll be upgrading! Thanks Adobe!

The excitement is more the price tag attached... good news for Mac owners...

It's like the end of Lent every year, my annual tithe to my chuch of the Holy A.

Always optimistic that it will cure all my pain and suffering.  Hope it is nicer to my old body than last season with the move up to 64bit, Win7, and CS5 all at the same time.

Think I will bite the bullet and upgrade the Quadro card to one with 4gigs of RAM and see if all that CUDA-Mercury mumbo-jumbo is worth $3k.  My guess is that it will help with projects like my current one that has nearly 2000 pieces of video going into 24 short movies.

Just got the receipt for my annual pledge, now the Adobe-kids can eat!

Hmmm.. I wonder if this would work... I own the full CS5 Production Premium and will upgrade to 5.5 but my business partner doesn't because she usually handles the office apps and is the second shooter. I'm the ONLY editor. We've been talking about getting her a copy of CS5 so she can practice and help out editing. Here's the question... If she has a full version of Photoshop CS2 and pays $1000 for the upsell to CS5 production premium today, does she qualify for the free update to 5.5? Essentially she could get 5.5 for $1000 right?

I sure hope so, because I'd love to have her help out.. hehe

D&R Films,

Yes, Adobe has a post announcement policy.  If you purchase software after the announcement, but prior to the release of the new version you will get a free upgrade.  However, make sure you read about it to make sure you take the proper steps to qualify.  When in doubt, call the Adobe store.

http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/153/tn_15304.html

To get to the CS5 version of the software at the Adobe Store, click on the link that follows "Can't Wait?".  It will take you to the page to buy the CS5 version of the software of choice.  Here is the link for the CS5 version of the Production Suite.

Folks, I can't promise anything, but if you bought CS5 directy from Adobe, a phone call to customer service may be useful for those who bought it a little earlier than March.  It worked for me (bought mine Feb. 16).  But for all I know, the guy who answered the phone when I called has since been reprimanded.  Worth a shot, none the less.

In Japan for some reason it costs twice the American price to buy any  Adobe software, even if you choose to download the English version

A large factor influencing my decision to upgrade, other than how much money I have got at the moment, is how much it will be to upgrade from 5 to 6 compared to 5.5 to 6.

For the upgrade from CS5 Master to 5.5 it costs 90,000 yen.

However, to upgrade a whole version, ie. from CS4 to 5.5, costs 159,000 yen; about the same as what it cost me to upgrade from CS4 to CS5.

If I pay 90,000 yen to upgrade to 5.5, then I want my upgrade from 5.5 to 6 to cost me no more than that either.

If it cost 159,000 to go to each new version, plus 90,000 yen to get a point release then I would feel like I were being royally raped. I'd be paying 410,000 in a 3 year period compared to the 320,000 in a 3 year period of the old development cylce of 18 months.

Of course, in that case I'd skip the point releases, but then end up worse off in that I would have to wait 6 months longer than previously to get each new version.

I also still can't believe that it costs more to subscribe to something you'll never own, than it does to buy it outright. That seems like reverse logic to me. I can understand the month by month subsrciptions being premium priced, but the yearly rental ought to end up about the same as buying a point upgrade.

I've always been marginally gob-smacked at the inequality between USD and UK software pricing.  It's virtually GBP = USD like-for-like.

In the UK , the upgrade from CS5 is 388 GBP versus 399 USB.  That's the equivalent of those across The Pond getting the upgrade for 633 USD!  I bet you'd kick up a bit of a fuss at that.

If it was an equal pricing policy, and those in the UK were offered it at the equivalent dollar price, we would get the upgrade for 245 GBP!

What's going on Adobe?  Why the huge difference?

You might want to check how much of the differential is comprised of taxes/duties imposed by your government.

Does "Enhanced Mercury Playback Engine"mean an enhancement over what we have now with Cs5 xx?

I would have to comment that  http://www.adobe.com/products/premiere/features._sl_id-contentfilter_sl_features+by+version_sl_new+since+cs5.html

is very short on detail in all respects.

I am also wondering how much more "Online ( Adobe Air , Flash)  intrusion will be incorporated into this release.

Todd's post Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5: What’s new and changed « Premiere Pro work area is a pretty detailed write-up of the new stuff, both from a feature standpoint and a refinement standpoint. Marketing ought to hire this guy...

Not quite got my head round this yet.  If you have the education Master Collection CS5, I assume there is no upgrade offer - this is what has happened in the past.  However, with it not being a 'full' update (only 4 or 5 progs actually have anything added) is there an upgrade price?  Or do you have to buy the whole suite again despite duplicating most of the programs?

Yes, there is an upgrade price... go to PRODUCTS above and then the page for what you have

When I go to the page for Master Collection the upgrade is $549 to go from CS5 to CS5.5

Sorry John - you seem to have misread my post.  I'm referring to the education copy.  I can't see the upgrade price for this that you refer.

As I said, I assume there is no upgrade price for education.  But I was willing to be proved wrong seeing as it's not a full incremental upgrade.

Thanks for looking anyway.
