The Egg (a photographic exercise)

Per Craig's suggestion, here is the thread for discussing photographing an egg.

I had no idea it would be as engrossing as it was, and it is getting late, but here are the shots, completely unedited. I will resize them and post them to my web site for discussion later. I should have time tomrrow night.

These are just screen prints from Bridge. Some repeats, and some that just didn't work. But these are the shots I took.

Funny thing is, I shot RAW plus JPG so I would not have to "fix" anything to show the pictures. I decided to shoot Monochrome since it is an egg, and I put it on a white foam core with a different style foam core behind it. The camera showed me monochrome. But when I transferred the images to my PC, I looked in Bridge and could clearly see that the color balance on the RAW files was horrid. So, my next investigation is to determine if that has any bearing on the monochrome image. Do I need to white balance for the lights I am using before I shoot monochrome? I would not think so, but I have a suspicion that I need to check it out.

Insert Image works again - go figure!

Very simple egg lighting:  straight from camera... example px

Single source light, no fill, diffusion control.

Great stuff Steven and I think there was a lot you got from the exercise in regards to light.

You would have seen how the egg develops contours with the shade and shadows.  How the reflections, highlights and shadows work. How the position of the source light affects the image and bg..

Hard and soft lighting produces different "looks" and effects. (contrast, reflections, shadows..)

Lot to like about the shot with 2 eggs in a bowl.  Nice idea (whimsy ) - esp. for an engineer! .

DOF and lighting is effective even though you could not help your "symmetry" predilection.

Explore that shot further and maybe ..no faces!

One thing apart from what you can learn from each.....is individually each shot has an o.k  value but collectively (as presented in the post) they are really interesting.  "art".

Consider presenting them as a montage proof sheet print.

BTW - probably is a good idea to white balance even when shooting monochrome.  The white bal sets up the sensor to respond to the colors in the scene and this will affect its response in terms of levels. Different colors have different reflectance values.  Do a test.

I was thinking of a gallery, with each shot framed and matted, about 3' apart, in a long hallway, with good lighting.

BTW - Please tell Steve that the "Bat phone is ringing."
