Photoshop 2019 - my collected problems

Hi together,

I'll start positive for a moment. Thanks Adobe for the new Photoshop version. I already enjoy some good new features.

But as with every new version, this one again causes me unnecessary difficulties. I understand that it is a complex program, but updates always make me think wether I installed a beta version.

With every new version basic stuff is broken or damaged. Then I have to switch back to the old version, wait a few months and try again.

Please Adobe, test your software properly before you publish it!

After the first hours with the new Photoshop version, here are my collected problems with v.20.0.0.

Maybe someone can confirm some points here or maybe I missed a solution for my problems. System is a uptodate Windows 10. Thank you very much for your help!

1. the new warp tool did not make it into the release although it is announced as a new feature?

https://www.adobe.com/de/products/photoshop/features.html

2. In order to transform layers proportionally, Shift must not be pressed anymore. Ok, why not...

But when I transform smart objects like raw files, the Shift key has to be pressed to keep the proportions.

Argh...

3. Until the update, it didn't matter how far outside the boundary box I clicked when I wanted to rotate the object. This was very convenient because the greater the distance between the bounding box and the cursor, the more accurate I could rotate the object.

Since the update, you can only click in a relatively small area around the object to rotate it. If you click too far outside, the transformation is completed. Clear deterioration.

4 .The automatic snapshot creation when saving a file no longer works since the update. Only a snapshot with the current status is created and named with the current date (without time...).

If you save again after further changes, no new snapshot will be taken.

Annoying. I would like to be able to go back to the last points where I saved. Creating a snapshot manually every time after saving is not a pleasant solution.

5. The new live preview of the blend modes may be quite interesting for beginners. However, by now I know how different blend modes work. If I open the menu and move the mouse quickly to my desired blend mode, Photoshop falters briefly and the image flickers through the different modes.

Pretty annoying and with large files unnecessary computing effort, actually only a question of time until that leads to a crash.

Great would be either an option to switch off the live preview or a small delay before the blend mode is activated. 0.2 seconds would probably be enough.

6. When I save a PSB, make further changes, save it again, and close the file afterwards, I'm asked again if I want to save it.

Usually the small asterisk behind the file name in the window title disappeared when saving and returned when further changes were made. This doesn't seem to work anymore.

The file is saved correctly every time, but Photoshop doesn't seem to recognize it anymore.

7. When I paint with the brush in an alpha channel and press CTRL+Z, not only the last brush stroke is undone, but also the view is reset to all channels.

This doesn't happen every time, but again and again. I couldn't find a sequence where it happens every time yet.

It has been only a day since the update.. I hope this list doesn't grow.

So far, so disappointing, Adobe...

Oh, and one more thing. I think this forum is a very important knowledge base for problems with Photoshop, workarounds, etc.

Is it correct that the forum displays 26 threads max? No further pagination? Currently only threads with answers younger than an hour are visible. All other content must be found via search.

That's incredible! Anybody annoyed by people asking the same questions again and again? That's one of the reasons...

I finally pulled the plug on the Adobe C(asual) C(rap). I cancelled my subscription of the Creative Cloud Photographers Plan and will use my old CS6 Version, Affinity Photo and Corel Painter from here on.

I couldn't stand it anymore. I have been using Photoshop for 20 years now, but this subscription atrocity and the way this company behaves since the marketing took over is no longer bearable.

Just wanted to let you know that I did what I proclaimed earlier in another thread:)

Of course, CC will stay with me at work, because I have no influence over the software they give me, but for my freelance work, it's back to the last version that I feel comfortable with.

Most I believe would be fine with Stable CS6 if the Current ACR Plug-in and it  latest ACR featured worked in CS6 but that not going to happen.  If Adobe developed Photoshop better maintaining  backwards compatibility and released fewer bugs and not change features like transform make it operation inconsistence braking users workflow habits. There would be far fewer users looking for an alternative to Photoshop.  Only old Adobe Customers like yourself can fall back onto CS6. What good are Layered files like PSD, PSB and Tiff if you don't have Photoshop. Adobe holds ones assets hostage. Adobe more or less lock in their newer users

I think Affinity can open (and even save) psd's fine. So maybe not hostage quite yet!

This update is the first to really make me re-think my dependency on Ps. I'll be looking closely at Affinity's development.

I just upgraded to CC 2019 and your points 2 and 3 are driving me insane.

    2) Fixed with the PSUserConfig.txt solution, thank you JJMack > why even make this change?? It isn't consistent within Photoshop, and I use Illustrator a lot, and it isn't consistent with it either. Sometimes I wonder if the PS and AI teams communicate with each other due to their UX inconsistencies (e.g. can't right-click on a layer in the layers panel to complete an action in Illustrator, major fail)

    3) this one had me cursing out loud, after the 5th time I decided to look for a solution, which is why I'm here.

So very frustrated, Adobe needs real competition.

So very frustrated, Adobe needs real competition.

    It's out there.

Affinity, Luminar, OnOne Photo Raw, Capture One and others are improving rapidly even though Adobe has had a 25 year head start.

Way back I used Macromedia products, then the Corel suite, but Adobe's suite is just better. I just wish they maximized their potential and standardized their UX - and stopped making ridiculous changes like in Point 2 of the OP.

UPDATE regarding point 3: Bounding Box - I chatted with Adobe last Friday to vent a bit and they asked to share my desktop to see what's happening. I replicated the bounding box issue to multiple people and they agreed it is a bug not a feature. What a relief, and today I received a phone call saying this will be presented to the software team to hopefully be fixed.

We may get frustrated with Adobe but at least their communication through their chat help has been top notch - very unexpected, faith restored

I'm having the same issue with "Automatically Create New Snapshot When Saving" which is really frustrating! And I have the same opinion on the range of rotating when transforming something, that's such an odd thing to get rid of ?_?

The problem with the asterisk not dissapearing after saving is directly connected to the broken snapshot feature. If the "Automatically create New Snapshot when Saving" option is unchecked, the asterisk is gone anytime you save the document, just like it was before.

I NEED the snapshot feature for my workflow. It saved my ass countless times and not having it working in the current version of Photoshop makes it unusable for me. When retouching or painting, every brushstroke takes up one step in the history palette and no matter how many steps you entered, there is always the "one step too far"- moment. The only saveguard in this case is the snapshot feature.

When I teach Photoshop in my company, this is the first thing I ask my students to turn on, because the ability to go back every step, whenever you saved the document is essential when working with 32-bit files that are many GB in size, hundreds of layers big, with multiple nested smartobjects and minutelong savetimes.

Until this is fixed, it is Photoshop 2018 for me.

To support the above written opinions I very much wish, that "features" like the "preview of blendmodes", the "ctrl + z" thing or the "shift to transform unproportionally" can be made OPTIONAL. These are no features that I am fond of as they disprupt the workflow, that I developed over more than 20 years.

I consider these things cosmetics for new users to ease them into the use of photoshop, which is all well and good. But for someone, who uses photoshop every day for 8-10 hours non stop, a change in the flow of things like this is simply annoying and no benefit whatsoever. So I would love to have the option to turn them off. A simple checkbox to switch these things on or off would be very much appreciated.

Today I was Playing with the History Panel Options and notice a first snapshot was taken the first time I save the document additional  saves did create new snapshots like CC 2018 However, the first snapshot taken seem to be updated I saw its thumbnail change.   I believe that is a bug the checkbox states Create new snapshot not update a snapshot.

This is how I see it.

    1. the new warp tool did not make it into the release although it is announced as a new feature?

Was not announce in my country the US but in other countries it was but is not in the update.

    2. In order to transform layers proportionally, Shift must not be pressed anymore. Ok, why not...

But when I transform smart objects like raw files, the Shift key has to be pressed to keep the proportions.

I did not find that to be the case on my machine Transform work the same for RAW placed images.  However it work backward compared to Photoshop other tools so I added the PSUserConfig.txt option that was in the announcement to revert transform back to its old correct way to operate.

    That is what I see.

Snapshots are not important for me but you may be able to automate the process for save you do. Automated save  done in action and scripts may not crate these automated snapshot.  Try setting up a save document event handler using the script event manager.

the history panel option does not seem to work if checked like it use to. A new snapshot is not created bit it looks like a current one is being updated I see content changing in the snapshots thumbnail.

I do not think this will annoy me but IMO it not really a new feature though it may be faster then the old way where you scrolled through the blend modes using the down and up arrow keys the blending need to be done either way to show a preview or set the blending. I do not know why Adobe felt this was a good thing to add.

I have no response for this the only time I see PSB files are when I see recovery files and open smart object layer object and these are small documents.   I do not work on huge documents my machine process clock speed is only 2GHz  my two six core xeon processor handle Photoshop quite well with smaller document than you edit.

    7. When I paint with the brush in an alpha channel and press CTRL+Z, not only the last brush stroke is undone, but also the view is reset to all channels.

I changed CC 2019 changed short-cuts back to what the were to be the same as I have in CS6, CC 2014 and CC 2018 for I have programmed my Logitech G13 keyboard joystick to step backwards and forward in history.  So for me Ctrl+Z is the same as has always been.

Thank you for this thoughtful reply,

I really appreciate that you took the time to outline why this feature change affects your workflow.
