Ok, I looked up which one you are doing on Phlearn. I see why he is doing the Black and White with it. It makes sense because he is teaching you to do a Blend/If technique, doing the luminance values and the color values separate in this adjustment.

So, you must have been clicking around kind of a lot there. At this point in the tutorial, you should only have the background layer and a B&W adjustment layer above it. So, you can try...

    - Highlight the layer named Background Copy, and hit delete. That will get rid of your extra background layer and get rid of the clipping of the adjustment layer to the layer below.

When you go to add the other adjustment layers he will ask you to add, don't press any keys when you do so. Just make sure either nothing is highlighted or at least your top layer is highlighted, then just click on the appropriate icon in the Adjustments Panel. This should help you avoid clipping things together.

Frankly, I'm surprised the tutorial would suggest a black and white adjustment layer to conceal dark circles, but I can see a few issues that may be happening here. Without seeing the tutorial you're saying you saw, I can only point out what I'm seeing.

Firstly, I see that you have your adjustment layer clipped to the layer underneath - this means that what you do will only apply to that layer, and not anything else. Since your image is full-screen, this clipping would be unnecessary. (the clipping is indicated by the downward arrow left of your adjustment layer icon). To remove it, Alt/click in between the layers.

Secondly, I'm not sure which adjustment layer they're suggesting, but the way we control where an adjustment shows, is by using a layer mask on that layer. To control the settings of the adjustment itself, you'd use the Properties panel to select the adjustment portion of that layer and alter the look.

With the layers the way you have them set, all you should be seeing is your whole image in grayscale.

If you add a link to the tutorial you're trying to follow, perhaps we can make more specific suggestions.
