Another forum user has asked me for tips on migrating Ps and Br to a new computer. Regularly backing up assets and data that can accidentally be lost--like presets, fonts, and keywords--is a mission critical issue, and it's the most important part of successfully reinstating your Adobe setup on a new machine. Cool. I've got a big database of image files categorized in Bridge, for use in digital collage, but I've never thought of putting PSD files into Bridge. I'll try it.

I just made my first vector drawing using the Curvature Pen tool in Photoshop CC v. 20. There are about a dozen shape layers that make up the image. Merging the layers, as I feared, turned them into a raster image. I put the layers in a group and am able to resize the group. I also exported the group as an SVG file, but the file is only 4.90 KB, so how can that contain even a tiny fraction of the data from the 2.17 MB PSD file? Photoshop requires me to rasterize the SVG file upon opening it, so that's worthless as far as preserving the vector image in a portable format that I can open and use in other Photoshop projects. What am I not understanding here, and is there any other standard procedure I should use to preserve my hard work in creating vector images?

OK, that answers my question. Thank you very much, Stephen. I've used Bridge to create a metadata template and add it large batches of image files--it's fairly straightforward in that program. I have a feeling I'll be able to make a template in Photoshop, but will have to open each PSD file to add it. . . . When I looked at the instructions for doing this at the time of my original post, the text was pretty opaque!

In the Export As menu of Photoshop, a choice is given between “Metadata: None" and “Metadata: Copyright and Contact Info.” The Help link says “Specify whether you want to embed metadata—copyright and contact information—in the exported assets.” I searched the web but cannot find anything more about this option. When I select Copyright and Contact Info, nothing gets added to the file’s pre-existing metadata (not surprisingly). Am I truly being offered the opportunity to ADD this metadata to files as I export them, and if so, what do I need to do to set this up so it works? Thank you!

Hi Trevor, Nice to "speak" with you again. Per your questions, I’m using Windows 10 Version 1709 on a new desktop PC. I only recently loaded the Wacom program on the new machine, after first getting my Adobe Photoshop subscription up and running. As you suggested, if the Wacom driver was going to recognize the version of Photoshop I’m running, it did it on install. My problems in more detail-- My tablet is the simplest of the Wacom family--its only mechanical feature is four buttons called ExpressKeys and the Pen isn't touch- or tilt-sensitive. When I depress the keys I set to Zoom In and Zoom Out, the UI appears on my monitor and it zooms in Ms Word, but nothing happens in Photoshop. The Radial Menu for my tablet is virtual. One must program an ExpressKeys to bring up the Radial Menu on the monitor screen. The menu appears when summoned in both Photoshop and Word, but none of the functions I programmed work when clicked on, in either program, except the command to bring up the Wacom Tablet Properties. I played some more with the Wireless Accessory Kit that stopped functioning. The transmitter in the tablet isn't finding the receiver in the computer's USB port. The transmitter searches for a few seconds, as the on-light flashes, then gives up. There are no instructions for troubleshooting this problem, and the kit with postage cost me $65, so I decided for once to try getting my money back. I sent Wacom Service an e-message explaining the problem and asking if they would please send me a return for refund authorization number. The email I got back from them is titled "reply, no" and the text gives me a case number. I assume this isn't their final answer to my request, though it could not be more cryptic or less encouraging! LOL On the bright side, I'm still sending thanks, to whomever it is due, that I seem to have escaped the lemon bullet with my new HP computer and two ASUS monitors.

In Photoshop 2019, at least with the Intous Pen & Touch, the command to size the brush tip is Ctrl + Alt + right-click and drag right/left. Up and down changes the Opacity.

I have a Wacom Intuos Pen & Touch Tablet #CTH490AK that I purchased in 2016. I have been using it almost exclusively for Photoshop and only to make selections and draw lines using the brush tool—simple dragging, clicking, and using the pen buttons to right-click. This week I decided I wanted to use the tablet's Express keys to zoom in and out. I spent quite a bit of time today, reading the online manual, setting and resetting the tablet properties, and making sure the driver is up-to-date. I’ve concluded that something is wrong with the tablet driver viz-a-vie Photoshop because the ExpressKeys and the Radial Menu aren't working. The UI appears when I activate them, but the buttons/slices don’t respond when pressed. The ExpressKeys functioned as advertised when I first got the tablet, and they still work for zooming in/out in Microsoft Word). The Radial Menu is dysfunctional in Word. BTW, the finger gestures all work (some of them not as shown in the Wacom properties menu). However, it won't switch from using the pen to hand gestures and I can't make accurate selections or draw with my fingers. I’m not terribly surprised by the malfunction because Wacom has always made iffy devices (the Wireless Adapter Kit I purchased worked for two weeks—now it suddenly won't stay ON in wireless mode with a full charge). The reason for this post is to verify that other Photoshop users are having similar trouble with the small pen tablets' ExpressKeys and Radial Menu so that I don’t feel tempted to keep trying to get it to work. Every now and then I check out the pen tablet market, to see if one of Wacom’s competitors has finally introduced a reliable product, with instructions in decipherable English, at a lower price point than Wacom. If anyone out there has discovered such a marvel, I’d love to hear about that, too.

The command to resize the brush tip is hold down Ctrl + Alt as you right-click and drag the pen right or left, then release all to save and exit. Move the pen up or down to change the Opacity. I have the 2016 Intuos Pen & Touch tablet, and it works very well on that. I share your frustration with Wacom. I'm preparing to post about my ExpressKeys and Radial Menu not working in Photoshop for I can't remember how long! I could be wrong, but I believe it is Wacom's fault for not updating its drivers to work in properly Photoshop.

This is an update which might help others who are moving Photoshop and Bridge to a new computer. I decided to move my Ps presets, actions and settings, my Bridge keywords and settings, and my fonts between computers using a high capacity USB thumb drive. It took an afternoon, but the controlled process allowed me to be up and working again without any hitches. I wrote out a step-by-step record of how I did it, from getting my Ps/Br subscription installed on the new computer to checking the completed transfer. I am setting up a new Windows 10 desktop PC with a C: SSD for programs and a 2 TB D: HHD for data, to run Photoshop and Bridge 2018. I am a digital collage artist so I do frequent Bridge searches during a project to find just the right background, texture, element, etc. I have about 14,000 images, 30 GB worth, that are multiple keyworded by subject, color, era, size, etc, The Core i7 processor is fast, but I'm wondering if creating a partition on the data drive, exclusively for the images I search in Bridge, will have a noticeable effect on search speeds. Alternatively, I could put the image catalog on the SSD drive (no partition), which would certainly give the fastest search results. However, when the image base eventually grows too large, I would have to move it to the data drive anyway. Would rather start out as I mean to go on, with the most efficient use of the two drives. I have a Windows 7 desktop PC and it was working fine, if a bit slow, until this Spring. Then, almost overnight, when I opened Photoshop CC 2018 or Bridge 2018, my computer would slow to a near standstill. Opening them both at the same time would freeze th computer. I don't know whether to blame this on the programs simply becoming too bloated or the Meltdown/Spectre updates from Microsoft that reportedly slowed down Windows 7 machines. It is probably both. I realize that, as a Mac user, this isn't much help to you, but at least you're not alone. Since I needed a new and improved computer to run Ps and Br, I considered switching to Mac. However, a lot of Mac users had insurmountable problems with PS after upgrading to High Sierra, both Adobe and Apple denied there was a conflict, and neither was fixing it. I don't know if it has ever been solved, but I read some folks who depend on Ps for their livelihoods were forced to abandon their Macs and buy a PC. 😞

I use the latest subscription version of Adobe Bridge CC to catalog, search, and retrieve items from my large collection of digital assets. I've tailored all the settings to suit my preferences. I'm moving to a new computer, and I want to doso efficiently, while moving all my settings. I found good instructions from Adobe on how to migrate Photoshop, but nothing on Bridge. I've searched online and looked for advice on YouTube. Nothing. Does anyone have a set of instructions on how to move Bridge to a new computer, or perhaps a useful link? Thanks!

However, I came across some cautionary reviews of BenQ that concern me. Still struggling with the decision to spend so much for the EIZO, especially since I've never seen one personally. I've also been researching video cards for Photoshop and whether 10-bit and HDR monitors are truly of any benefit to digital artists and photographers. My sympathies, Margaret, for such a vexing problem! I am considering whether to upgrade to a monitor with 10-bit color (or perhaps 8 + 2) and a Quadro GPU. Can you, or friend Fosse, please explain the terms "synthetic gradient" and, if this is the correct wording, "natural gradient?" Margaret, have you tried reverting to the last-but-one Quadro driver? Have either of you reported the problem to Nvidia and/or Adobe? What a headache!

I spent today learning about Photoshop CC's settings in Edit > Preferences > Performance and studying the Optimize Photoshop CC performance white paper at https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/optimize-photoshop-cc-performance.html, specifically the section "Adjust cache levels," excerpted below. I ended up entering the five bullet points into a chart and extrapolating the information into more concise, hopefully user-friendly, rules of thumb. I thought I would share the results for anyone who is interested. See the last row for guidelines for those who work in Photoshop with "small," "moderate," large, and "huge" files. For portrait photographers and digital painters, I offer the following chart of pixel sizes for canvases in Photoshop. The new Kyle T. Webster brushes are terrific! I just found a video on how some of the brush packs, when they were being distributed by Kyle himself, came with Ps Action presets. For instance, Kyle sold an impasto painting pack that included about 20 Actions, which added Effects to his oil painting brushes that gave them realistic impasto texture. The oil painting brushes by themselves are very flat, especially the palette knives! To copy a brush to another group, drag it into the target group. Then, in the Preset Manager, save the group by selecting its contents and clicking Save As... Then, delete the group where the brush was originally found and reload it; the brush you moved will be restored there. It's a work around, but so is doing anything with Brushes since every change must be saved in the Preset Manager for it to permanently "stick."
