Well, I had a collection of 12,000 shapes loaded from previous versions of Photoshop that had seemingly no issues. I did not test how many was the upper limit. I just deleted the folder 😛 Yes, I am aware of the resource consumption but I have a 96GB HP Z800 Dual Xeon system with a 2TB SSD Scratch disk so I am not that starved for RAM or Scratch...

Thank you, PECourtejoie My issue was loding net new custom shapes... While your tips did not directly address the issue, I did find out what was going on. Perhaps others have a similar issue. Photoshop will NOT tell you that there is a maximum number of shapes you can have loaded. Nothing complains there are too many. I found out by double-clicking the Shapes .CSH file and Photoshop displayed an error saying too many shapes were already loaded. Deleting the shapes from the folder and restarting does not change things. You have to manually DELETE the Shapes or Shape Groups in the panel. Once enough room is made, your grayed out options re-appear. You can then re-load any shapes including the legacy ones. Thanks all once again for the help.

Seeing lots of posts regarding SHAPES in latest PS CC 2020 (21.1.3) but no joy. I have grayed out shapes and nothign I do solves the issue. I have copied the shapes files to multiple different spots with no resolution. I am just trying to use my shape files. Some new ones and some old ones I have had for many years. 1. What should be the proper folder location (Windows 10) for the shapes files? 2. How should I be loading these shape files? 3. Custom Shapes vs Non Custom Shapes? I am confused. Thanks for the help and support. A call to Adobe Support yielded a :35 minute wait time and I had to bail.

Nope, not a solution... at all. A- if you don;t have Lightroom B- inefficient workflow Is it so hard to get HEIC support and not 3 dimensional coagulation of reverse inverse yaqua silly feature? Really, HEIC import = EASY and LOGICAL. Some other feature adds are ridiculously NOT needed by most... but importing from an iPhone certainly should count.

After some time and testing various options, the ONLY way I have gotten it to work without an add-on or modifications to the OS or the App in Windows 10, I can get it to display thumbnails consistently. The files above are exactly the same files but the duplicate showing the thumbnail is a [flattened] PSD as opposed to a layered PSD. Not ideal, of course, but at least one step closer to working as expected. I assume the layered file does not expose a BMP or JPG the OS can use to display the thumb. I tested both Compressed and Uncompressed and both formats work. However, you do have to SAVE IT as a new file and then delete the old one and rename the new one appropriately as needed. Re-saving the same file name does not always work for displaying the thumbnails

This is getting really weird. I am tired of this issue. It does not matter what camera (D2Xs, D3, D3s, D4s, D7200, D800, D810, D500) ALL show the problem. Six (6) different computers, over 50 different CF, SD, XQD cards Mac OS (various versions) Windows (7, 8, 8.1, 10) Different manufacturers Different versions of Adobe Camera RAW and Lightroom and Bridge The ONE common is ALWAYS Adobe product. SOME NEF files are corrupted, some are not. I have converted some of the "corrupt" files in On-line converter and get a fine output. However, I can;t prove the result is the embedded JPG or an actual processing of the RAW data. I have tried every known method since I started having these problems. I also have tried copying the files from the CF card first to a Hard Drive.... same problem and still random BTW, also many media from HDD, SDD, SAN, NAS, etc. Even DVD and CD burned for kicks LOL Thanks "Adobe" for your help. YOu have the resources to get to the bottom of this. Your end users can't possibly do the deep research you can. We are paying customers who expect some help. Also I have read every single "alternative" way of doing it which is why I said don't bother posting them... I am ONLY interested in a proper solution to this natively by the OS or by Adobe. Hello all, I have lost the thumbnail icons in Windows. At one point in the past, .PSD file icons displayed as a Thumbnail Preview of the file. This stopped working a long time ago and I have the latest version of Photoshop installed. Windows is Pro x64 and Photoshop is also the x64 bit version. Please DO NOT suggest third party plugins, extensions, DLLs, CoDec packs, etc. I am not interested in third party solutions. This should be a function Adobe enables. If it MUST be from Microsoft, I will pursue that option. Thank you for your help in advance.

No no, of course I get that. But sometimes I have edits from Photoshop or other tools that manage the sidecar files as well. Blindly doing anything isn't my favorite. Again, it should be "easy" and "simple" for adobe to simply pull the ExIF data at the time you touch the image... no need for workarounds IMO. Although it is nice to have a workaround, I want the bug fixed properly 🙂

No worries... I basically have my photos in various stages of taste or desire when it comes to edits. Having to commit them blindly is not something that would work for me. I may go to an image and decide the settings are not worth it and want to go back to another state or reset completely. I know I can always reset completely but I want my settings to be untouched by the program until I want to change them. I feel that pulling Lens Data can be done automatically by Adobe without anything done by the user to the images or otherwise 😉

Yeah, I had done that already but it still is a bit hacky (word?) and does not allow me to decide if a photo is worthy of saving MetaData/Changes or not 😞 I want Adobe to simply fix it by just pulling Lens data on its own automatically and without user intervention... 🙂 Thanks for your tips 🙂

Any way to do it across the catalog easily and non-destructively? I don't have time to go through each file and do this, even doing multiple files is dangerous because I have different decisions to make on Metadata and Develop Settings to each image in a catalog 😞

...thanks Bill And to add. I am also working with Nikon D800 files which are likley the largest files right now of any 35mm dSLR camera. My Catalog is HUGE, yes, over 2GB so if you're corect about SQLlite, we are doomed a Relational Journaling DB is the only way to go then. Regardless, all I would like is a true acceleration of anything that is CPU bound. If calculating the pixels from my image is CPU bound, please, use up all 24 threads... go for it, I don;t mind my workstation being sluggish for toher tasks.. I am ONLY WORKING ON ONE TASK atthe time, believe me.. Or at least give users CHOICES ... give [me] the choice of super fast and slow GUI response or Super Fast GUI response and really poor image developing performance. Oh and make it a slider, not an ON-OFF Thanks

To add to the discussion... I just moved from a Mac Pro 1,1 with dual Xeon Quad Cores, 32GB RAM running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 in Bootcamp under Mountain Lion to a new HP Z620 Dual Xeon Six Core E5-2620 (trying to save some money) 32GB RAM Running Windows 8 Enterprise x64 I was shocked that the performance of LR4x was not at least double that of my previous system. About the only thing I noticed being faster is the Spot Removal tool... otherwise it is about a dead heat. I understand about batching jobs to increase performance, but, I expected more from single jobs. I have 24 threads and only half are being used to any degree and never at 100% which I expect. All of my other software has taken full advantage of the new cores and threads. Autodesk 3DS Max, V-Ray (inside Max) takes up all 24 threads to 100% immediately on start. HUGE increase in performance while rendering 3D Artwork in Max... I say at least 2.5 times more performance than the slightly upgraded Mac Pro 1,1 So, I want to add my voice to the crowd and look forward to Adobe making full use of the user's hardware if warranted, even if it is with my permission. BTW, my Boot and Scratch disks are the fastest consumer drives right now: Samsung 840 Pros .. 256GB each. My Data drive is a WD Black Series 2TB model. Thank you for your insight!

BTW, regardless of treat JPG and RAW same or separate, the issue is that LR ignores a bunch of the RAW NEF files during import... it does a few and then gives up at the end.
I have been simply copying files and synchronizing folder to work around it until fixed.

Cameras are a mix of Nikon D3, D800, D2Xs and D70.
Importing from CF Card via FW800 or any other way (USB, FW400) always imports a few pairs of JPG+RAW and then finishes off by importing mostly JPGs and then leaving a bunch of pairs behind :-(
Have also reproduced this on Windows LR4. BTW, the cards are Sandisk Extreme Pro and Extreme IV so far... from 4GB to 16GB in size... all behave similarly.
MAYBE it has to do with previewing... I notice that I start to double-click on thumbnails in preview window and then all of a sudden, about 10 previews in, the preview is a thumbnail and not the full zoomed in image. Maybe it has something to do with that.

I must say I am having this problem as well, no resolution in sight. I have read all suggestions here... nothing seems to help. Here is the scenario: -ONLY when importing a set of files, simple Nikon RAW .NEF plus .JPGs out of camera. -Quantity is no matter -Problem arises when I preview a large number of images before improting to cull the import down to the necessary needed. -The more images I double-click on to preview from the thumbnails, the performance progressively degrades -CPUs rarely below 100% -Eventually, LR3 becomes unresponsive and while it will not crash, it requires a swift kick (kill process) +Workaround is to simply import the images and delete after in Grid/Edit modules. Systems where observed +OLD System -Intel Quad Core Extreme QX6700 -4GB RAM -Windows 7 Ultimate x64 -Dual 10K RAID0 Boot -Dual 10K RAID0 Scratch -Dual 7.2K RAID1 Data +NEW System -Mac Pro 1,1 (Upgraded) -Dual Intel Xeon X5355 Quad Core Processors (8 cores total) -32GB RAM FB-DIMMs -Boot Camp running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 (OS-X running 10.6.7) -Single 7.2K Boot -Single 7.2K Scratch -Single 7.2K Data -Single 7.2K Backup Lightroom 3.4.1 x64 Let me know if more info helps or not.
