So I've been working in Flash Builder, building AIR based ios and android apps for a few years now and have some success under my belt and some happy clients. A couple of them are doing some long term planning and in our discussions I'm undoubtedly going to be asked to weigh in on our development platform(s), what I think we need to look to for future version development, changes etc. etc. I'm worried about relying on AIR (I use flash builder 4.6 with the latest SDK, etc. and just LOVE the workflow and AS3 in general) and finding myself stuck with yesterdays technology that has been abandoned. I came across the whitepaper by Adobe on the future after Flex was transitioned to Apache Flex, and it seemed to indicate around 5 years of future support / functionality for AIR developers using flex / flash builder... or did I not understand that correctly? My primary question is whats NEXT for someone like myself, tasked with making development platform decisions for a few clients' businesses and charting the course for development environments for new and legacy apps / software. I've experimented with HTML 5 / javascript based tools / platforms like phonegap, etc and they look promising I guess, but if AIR and Apache Flex will be here to stay (generally speaking) I'll probably stick with it and ride it out as it evolves since I like and am familiar with it. But if its the case that its a known fact that it will at some point in the not to distant future, be sidelined and eventually die out, then I need to start sizing up the players to decide whats next for my development platform of choice. I looked for an existing thread on this but couldn't find anything, current that addresses it. If anyone can share any links or other official statements or their opinion I'd really appreciate it. Thanks in advance!

Yeah, I figured as much... I've gotta take off my training wheels and eventually move towards Native Extension development to do some of these types of native functions... scared to, but theres no way around it I guess. Assuming you have experience, is Native Extension development a steep learning curve ( I know its all relative though )? Thanks for replying.

Is it possible to programatically create and send an SMS text message on android and ios using adobe AIR? I have had success using navigatetourl to create the sms message, but was curious to know if its something that AIR is capable of or if os-specific native development is required to accomplish this. I'm using flash builder 4.6 and AIR 15.

Paul, in the meantime, I recently finally dived into the camera ANE about a week ago for a new project, and if you can elaborate on what you'd like to see in a demo / example I'll take a stab at throwing it together for you to use as a starting point. One of my recommendations was for a way to allow users to share bare-bones code examples with each other so hopefully that is a part of the support overhaul they guys are working on over at Distriqt. The ANEs are good and well documented, but I know first-hand that sometimes you just need a starting point of reference to look at and sink your teeth into. Im running FB 4.6 premium (still havent upgraded to 4.7 yet) but the mxml and as3 code should work for you. Thanks and good luck.

Thanks, it seems to have been some sort of issue that required that I update to the latest AIR beta and add the ios SDK to the build in flash builder... After Michael updated the ane and posted the update to GitHub and suggested I update AIR and add ios sdk it worked for me. I had indeed tried it on multiple iphones, one running ios8 and one running 7.1.2 -- I hope to add an ipad or two to my test devices next week and cant wait!

can you share your code routine for this? Im struggling with the same issue and like how you describe your approach to it, just not 100% sure how to write the code from scratch. thanks!

Michael, I just added the issue in github -- https://github.com/distriqt/airnativeextensions/issues/240 ... I included a bare-bones mxml / as3 example of how Im using the ane as well in case theres issues with that... Let me know if theres anything else I can do to help out as we try to figure this out. for now I'll launch my app / submit for approval without the audible sound working and just rely on visible notification badge and the vibration of the device. Thanks for your hard work on this and the great customer support!

Thanks, AsterLUXman -- Michael was right, turned out to be a corrupted build and works fine now in tems of INSTALLING and Running the air app... but the original issue -- the notification audible sound (fx05.caf) still isnt playing at all.

I updated to the latest air 15 beta and have flash builder pointed to the ios 8 sdk and two things I can report from tests on an iphone 4s running ios 7.1.2: 1.) when I use the NEWer copy of the ANE that I got from github yesterday, the install process works fine, but when I tap the icon (on iphone) the app launches, to a black screen for a split second, then goes away (returns to ios home screen) aburptly, the app minimizes and if I double-tap the hardware 'home' button at bottom of phone, I can see the app is listed as one of the currently running apps (represented by a 'black' screen along with other apps that are currently running), and if I select it to try to give the app FOCUS and bring it into the foreground it once again goes full black screen then minimizes again. 2.) if I go back to the previous ane it works just as it did before, notification works but just doesn't play the .caf audio file. not sure what else to try on my end but will test on an iphone 5 shortly and see if results are same there since it runs ios8. my purpose in keeping this old iphone4s running 7.1.2 is to have an idea how the app will run for old devices folks may have who might have chosen to NOT upgrade to ios8 (since ios8 apparently runs horribly on the 4s)... but if that turns out to be the issue (that the ios version just isnt fully supported) then I'll ditch the idea of backwards compatibility and stress that ios 8 or better is required. If it helps further diagnose this I sent via email (I have your email address from some earlier support you provided when I bought the ane package initially) Friday with a simplified mxml document that shows how I am attempting to use the notifications ane (the as3 code I wrote). Thanks again for your help with this... Im hoping I can work this out and submit my app Monday.

Michael, I just tried it (just replacing the ANE with the new .ane file from the lib folder -- not making any changes to the actionscript or MXML at all -- let me know if theres changes I need to make though)... I get the following error when attempting to "Export Release Build" from flash builder... (see image below)

Thanks, Michael... 1.) testing on an iphone 5, running ios8... and an iphone 4s running ios 7.1.2 and htc one running android 4.4.2 --- development machine is a macbook pro running Mavericks 2.) using flashbuilder 4.6 premium, apache flex 4.12.1. the notification center is set to play sound for the test app, the caf file is packaged / included (using the default .caf thats included, but ultimately would want my own audio file which I would covert to caf format.) 3.) otherwise notifications work fine on both ios and my android test device... on android I get the native / os settings, user-defined notification audible sound, I noticed - so NEITHER ios or android plays the fx05.caf thats included with the ANE example. on ios I get vibration and notification displayed -- just NOT the sound. I can email you my mxml document / as3 code example (a bare bones example the is producing the same result as my larger client project where I first noticed it.)... or I can give you other info that I may be lacking in this reply -- just let me know. Thanks so much for your help with this.

Thanks for this up for ane users input. Another good signal as far as I'm concerned and gives me a comfort level using your ANE's and keeping up with the great work you guys are doing at Distriqt... 1.) Ability to see other ANE users questions / answers for common issues / problems with specific ANE's -- Im willing to bet you guys get asked the same questions ALL THE TIME about common issues and having access to something similar to how stackoverflow works where users can vote up or down and vote on the best / correct answer sort of maintains itself -- the good answers / responses rise to the top and users can easily find answers themselves. 2.) Ability to have access to user-contributed code snippets for commonly used, basic (or advanced) uses of ANE's. 3.) Categorized resources for people using Flash Builder, Flash Develop or developing natively... maybe through the use of 'tags' on users questions and answers / responses. In short, I love the stackoverflow model (though I have my own issues with StackOverflows model - generally speaking -- and that has more to do with HOW people use it, not so much the mechanics of it)... its self-service oriented and when users all chip in, it quickly becomes a deep resource of info and solutions that otherwise require a user inundate you all with repetitive questions or scour the web to pull together different resources and figure it out themselves. I say lets 'pool' our knowledge / experiences and all ride the train together, so to speak! Thanks Distriqt team! Keep up the good work and focus on better supporting the ANEs.

Hey, thanks for updating this. I know its a year later now but it was cool that you posted updated info for folks chasing down these same answers. I just wish Apple wasnt so strict with background modes usage... Google will let you upload almost ANYTHING you can build, but iOS, not so much.

ohla, I came across your post here regarding Distriqt's local notifications ANE and had a question... you mentioned that you were "trying to have a sound play when the user receives a local notification (app is closed or in background)..." How did that turn out for you? I am also trying to do the same and it works brilliantly on Android but on iOS I dont get any notification if the device is ON but the app is in the background or the device is in a suspended state i.e. the screen dimmed and in sleep mode, so to speak... Im trying to avoid push notifications and am hoping I can get background local notifications to work. Thanks for any feedback you can provide from your project / experience with this issue.

You were spot on. I just had to get all the keychain access info back inplace and its always a little tricky getting the private keys for the certificates for Dev and Dist but it all worked out. Guess my panic mode was a bit out of hand from the hard drive failure -- new SSD and back up and running though. thanks for the reply / help.

I love the folding feature in flash builder but was wondering if theres a way to have code folding 'remembered' so when I re-open my mxml file it persists? Thanks

so my hard drive died on my macbook pro and I upgraded to a new hybrid ssd drive and need to get back up and running with Flash Builder 4.6 to recreate a project I was developing for a client (lesson learned about backup!)... I never backed up my ios key / certificate and need to know if Im completely screwed in terms of being able to resume ongoing development of existing apps (i.e. releasing NEW versions of current / existing apps) what do I need to do to make sure my apps can be signed same as the previously launched versions / builds?

I have mobile app I've developed in flash builder 4.6 (flex 4.12 sdk) and I have a stagewebview component which contains HTML5 audio (mp3 retrieved from my web server and streamed / played via the app)... I want to have the ios version of the app CONTINUE to play the mp3 / html5 audio when the user presses the home button on their iphone or opens another app... so that when multitasking, my audio continues to play (where theres no other NEW audio started, for instance). I have added the following to my manifest but it still doesnt do what Im after. I used this in another mobile app where I just play audio from the url directly in flash builder (i.e. NOT via webview component) -- but here it seems the webview suspends (Im guessing)... <iPhone> <InfoAdditions><![CDATA[ <key>UIDeviceFamily</key> <array> <string>1</string> </array> <key>UIBackgroundModes</key> <array> <string>audio</string> </array> ]]></InfoAdditions> <requestedDisplayResolution>high</requestedDisplayResolution> </iPhone> Is there a way around this so my audio continues to play? My test device is an iphone 4 running the latest version of ios7

Thanks, that helps make it a little clearer... I'll make sure I include the Default-568h@2x.png in the package and assuming its ok, I'll store it in the views/images folder and will see if that gets it through... maybe I better just omit all splashscreens / images alltogether mxml / flashbuilder AND iOS... and consider just using a process whereby I show a specific 'view' / page in my app for a few secconds, then it automatically changes to the main app UI... but for now, just making sure I understand the change iOS requires and can really get the process nailed down is fueling my drive to get my arms around this and overcome it. Thanks again for your feedback.

Thanks for all who have participated in this thread... I've been following it while dealing with the same "iPhone 5 Optimization Requirement" error / response when submitting an app. I have my launch image defined in my main mxmxl document the way I've always done it (using the main mxml file in the projectname/src/default package folder of my flashbuilder 4.6 project. question, where I define the splashscreen image (i.e. splashScreenImage="@Embed('views/images..../filename.png").... does that HAVE to use an image with a precise / specific name now? for maximum compatibility do I have to do 2 versions of this image? right now Im using an image with an arbitrary name and dimensions of 640x1136 (vertically oriented), and its being rejected still I see a lot of varying reports on where the default 'image(s)' need to be located (root, etc), can someone elaborate on exactly where they need to be stored? for now I've removed the splashscreen image alltogether just to get in the review queue but need to ultimately get my arms around this new requirement for iOS publishing. note: im using FB 4.6/7 on a mac book pro and have already updated to AIR 3.7 successfully.

late to this discussion, but I agree with iBrent (huge fan, your youtube videos got me off and running with FB -- thanks)... I run both versions... but am working on forcing myself to learn how to get used to strictly using code and NOT design view... I think it just makes me a stronger developer and forces me to think through things that otherwise I would just rely on the software to handle / do... if that makes sense.
