Firefly Creative Challenge: Slaying the Retro 80's look

  • September 10, 2026

You've probably seen it all over your feed this week: portraits that look like they were pulled from a shoebox in 1987, warm studio light, big hair, soft focus, film grain, and unmistakably still the person in the original photo. It's a genuinely fun trend. Let's do it properly, in Firefly.

THE CHALLENGE

Turn a photo of yourself into a convincing 80s portrait. Not a filter, a full restyle: era-appropriate hair, clothing, lighting, and grain, while staying you recognizably. Pick a style, or invent your own:

  • 📸 Studio Portrait - the classic glamour headshot: dramatic lighting, a big collar or shoulder pads, a plain backdrop.
  • 🎬 Bollywood Portrait - the studio-glam look of Hindi cinema's biggest decade: bold color, voluminous hair, statement jewelry.
  • 👨‍👩‍👧 Family Album - the warm, slightly imperfect portrait that lived in every home's photo album.
  • 📰 Magazine Cover - editorial styling, dramatic but natural lighting, the polish of a period cover shoot.

WHAT TO INCLUDE

  • Your before photo and your 80s after.
  • The style and prompt you went for.
  • Portrait orientation, 4:5 or 3:4 works best, since that's how most studio portraits from the decade were actually framed.

HERE'S MINE

The prompt I used (GPT Image 2.5 Flare): Transform this photo into an authentic 1980s Bollywood studio portrait. Keep my facial features and identity recognizable. Give me period-appropriate 1980s Indian clothing, hairstyle, and accessories, with warm studio lighting, soft focus, subtle film grain, and slightly faded colors. Make it look like a real photograph taken in India in the 1980s, not a modern photo with a vintage filter. Do not change my facial structure or make me look like a different person. Keep the result photorealistic. Avoid excessive vintage effects, sepia tones, or artificial-looking aging. The photograph should look as if it were shot naturally on an analog camera in the 1980s.

SAMPLE PROMPTS

Classic Hollywood portrait - Turn this photo into a glamorous 1980s Hollywood studio portrait. Keep my face and facial features unchanged. Give me period-accurate 1980s hair, makeup, and clothing, with dramatic studio lighting, soft focus, subtle film grain, and the look of an analog camera.

Old family album - Recreate this photo as if it were taken in an Indian family photo album in the mid-1980s. Keep the person’s face and expression natural. Add period-appropriate clothes, hairstyle, and background, with a simple indoor setting, analog camera texture, slight grain, soft lighting, and realistic film colors. Avoid a modern digital look.

1980s magazine cover - Turn this photo into an Indian magazine portrait from the 1980s. Keep my face recognizable and realistic. Use period-appropriate hair, clothing, jewelry, and makeup, with a simple studio background, dramatic but natural lighting, soft focus, and analog film texture. Make it look like a real editorial photograph from the decade.

Retro street photograph - Imagine this photo was taken on an Indian street in 1987. Keep my face and identity recognizable. Recreate the surroundings, clothing, hairstyles, vehicles, signs, and colors to match those of India in the late 1980s. Use realistic daylight, analogue film grain and the texture of a photograph printed from film.

HOW TO TAKE PART

Original, 1980s, 1880s, 1780s

I took a more varied approach to this. Using my current portrait, provided the following prompt to GPT Image 2.5 Flare in Firefly web:

Transform this photo of a man into an authentic 1980s studio portrait. Keep my facial features and identity recognizable. Give me period-appropriate 1980s clothing, hairstyle, and accessories, with warm studio lighting, soft focus, subtle film grain, and slightly faded colors. Make it look like a real photograph taken in the 1980s, not a modern photo with a vintage filter. Do not change my facial structure or make me look like a different person. Keep the result photorealistic. Avoid excessive vintage effects, sepia tones, or artificial-looking aging. The photograph should look as if it were shot naturally on an analog camera in the 1980s.

Then produced subsequent images for the 1880s and finally the 1780s. This is what the robot spat out. Absolutely despise the 1980s look!
