We’re excited to announce the InDesign 21.5.1 release! This latest InDesign update includes an important stability fix, along with all the new features and workflow improvements introduced in InDesign 21.5.

Enhance Table Accessibility in PDF and EPUB Exports

Creating accessible documents is now easier than ever. You can now include header rows, header columns, and table captions when exporting tables to PDF and EPUB, helping screen readers correctly interpret table structure and making your documents more accessible for everyone.

Bug Fixes - Thanks to You

Along with the new features and improvements introduced in 21.5, InDesign 21.5.1 includes an important stability fix:

Windows: Fixed an issue where InDesign 21.5.0 could crash when using customer plug-ins that rely on table APIs built against older SDK versions.

InDesign 21.5 also includes several additional fixes to improve stability and reliability, including:

Fixed an issue where the primaryTextFrame property couldn't be set on a MasterSpread through InDesign scripting.
Fixed an issue where the Caption option wasn't available in the Table Options context menu.
Fixed an issue where duplicated images onto the pasteboard when opening certain PDFs, improving performance.
Windows: Fixed intermittent crashes during document recovery.

The new accessibility features in InDesign 21.5.1 look very useful, especially the support for header rows, header columns, and table captions in PDF and EPUB exports. The improved Data Merge support for multiline records and UTF-8 files should also save a lot of time when working with multilingual projects. The keyboard shortcut search and better cloud document management are helpful workflow improvements as well. I’m glad to see that Adobe is also focusing on stability and bug fixes based on user feedback.

Today I lodged a complaint with Australia’s ACCC:

On 1 August, I signed up for what I thought was a short-period licence for an Adobe product - In Design, with the expectation I'd likely need it for a week or so longer than the free period. I knew I'd definitely not need it for any longer than a month. Today, 28 August, within a one-month period, I have gone to their website to cancelled, and am informed that I've incurred a cancellation fee of $197.76. And of course they have my credit card details. They assert that this cancellation fee policy was in the original agreement, and most likely it was. I acknowledge I didn't read the fine print; I needed the software for a single project. The monthly fee is $35.99, the cancellation fee is 4.5 times the monthly fee. To my simple understanding, a one-month fee goes for 30 or 31 days from the inauguration date. Thus a one-month fee starting on 1 August should continue to 31 August. Evidently in Adobe's mind, the plain English meaning of 'one month' differs from their interpretation. I think this is unconscionable. Adobe In Design should be required to display this cancalletion policy and fee prominently on the sign-up page, and set out its calculation of the one-month fee. Had I know this, I could have paid a skilled colleague a fee of approx. $50 to complete the task. I'm going to forward this to Adobe for their information.Thank you, and cheers.

Here is the thing: there are two different versions of the monthly paid plan:

the “inexpensive” plan with a monthly fee of $35.99 (Australian);
and the “expensive” plan with a monthly fee of over $100.

The difference between these: the expensive plan can be cancelled any time. The inexpensive one sets one up for a yearly plan and invokes a financial penalty when cancelling before the end of that year.

The trouble for most users is that Adobe always presents the inexpensive plan as default, and it takes an extra step (clicking on See all plans & pricing details) to expose the more expensive monthly plan that can be cancelled anytime.

I do not concur with this “dark UX design pattern” approach, because it fools people into believing that the inexpensive monthly plan can be cancelled any time. Worse, Adobe usually offers a special deal as well on this inexpensive plan, which attracts even more users into buying that plan.

Therefore, compared to opting for the expensive monthly plan which allows for cancelling anytime --and the plan you should have picked-- you actually overpaid by (198 - 135 AUD) 63 Australian Dollars.

Which is much less than the 4.5 times that you calculated. Still a painful lesson, of course - but perhaps not as painful now that you know that the actual monthly plan expense is actually 3.7 times higher in reality.

Buggiest release yet! Had to reinstall 21.4.1. Installed 21.5.1 running an M1 Mac pro, indesign will work for two clicks, then no undo, no selection tool, no click input. Have to Force Quit every time. DO NOT INSTALL!!!

Worst update ever! I did the update, now it will NOT let me save or save as any new or existing documents to my network, it wants me to save to my desktop then drag it to my network. I open it after drag, same thing! Did clean install, deleted preferences, went to old versions, Adobe cleaner tool, nothing works…. so over not being able to work!

I’d already tried resetting caches and preferences; double-checked to make sure I’d gotten both, and they’re gone. Gave ID full access; still won’t launch. Reverted to 21.4.1 (I didn’t have an option for 21.5), and still won’t launch. Did a complete uninstall, including “Remove” option on preferences, then installed 21.5.1. Now it bounces in the dock for a very long time, but never shows a splash screen or comes to the foreground. It still thinks it’s running -- I have to force quit it before I can attempt launching again -- but it never actually finishes the launch process. This deadline (and probably client) are long gone. I’ll make another attempt on Monday, if I’m still employed after all this fun.

Frustrating.

Are you using any third-party plug-ins? If so, try to disable them as a test.

Also, try to create a new clean admin account in System Settings > Users & Groups and work from there. Can you launch InDesign there?

InDesign 21.5.1 won’t launch for me after the update -- Mac Studio, MacOS 26.5.2. A little digging through logs shows it’s getting a path error when trying to load the AIAssistant plugin. Help???

For starters, try resetting your preferences and caches:

Also, make sure Full Disk Access is granted to InDesign in System Settings > Security & Privacy.
