It can help you build skills and create production-ready InDesign documents faster. Instead of digging through tutorials, simply ask the AI Assistant "How do I create a table of contents?" and learn as you go. Or save time by having it set up your layout and apply bulk text/image/style edits with a single prompt. Why it mattersDesigners spend a huge amount of time on repetitive tasks and navigating menus, and when you get stuck, context-switching to YouTube or Help pages breaks your flow. How to Save an InDesign File for Older Versions (IDML) Did you know? InDesign files aren't backward compatible by default - a .indd file saved in InDesign 2024 simply won't open in InDesign CC 2019. But there's a simple workaround: export as IDML. What is IDML?IDML (InDesign Markup Language) is an open, XML-based file format that acts as a universal bridge between InDesign versions. Any version of InDesign from CS4 onwards can open an IDML file - making it the go-to format when collaborating with colleagues or clients on older software. But backward compatibility is only half the story. IDML is also one of the most reliable ways to recover a corrupted InDesign file. Because IDML is XML-based rather than binary, exporting a damaged .indd to IDML and then reopening it often strips out the corruption that's causing crashes, freezes, or "cannot be opened" errors - even when other recovery methods fail. Many InDesign users keep this trick in their back pocket specifically for emergencies, no
InDesign blank document presets – i work in Australia where we don’t use the US page sizes, and several times a day, I create new InDesign files, and start with an A4, A3, A5 most times. Every time, I need to click ‘View all presets’ and scroll past the US sizes, down to these sizes. I would LOVE to be able to either delete or move Letter, Legal, Tabloid, Letter-Half, Legal-Half, US business card, Compact Disc (which I will never use), so I have my A3, A4, A5 at the top. I know this is only a minor thing, but it’s just something I would think is a no brainer to be able to do. I think most countries outside of the US would find this useful. Is there a way i haven’t found online, that anyone knows of?
I am attempting to depict flashing railway signal lights on paper and in a PDF. I’m using a multi-pointed star that I created in Illustrator, copy-pasted into InDesign and it looks great on screen. But when I export to PDF and then print that PDF on paper, anything on a black background just doesn’t show up.This is how it looks in InDesign at 200% magnification. Same 200% from Acrobat and appears the same on paper:If I zoom in to 800% on the PDF it’s marginally better but I need it to look correct at 100%, not 800%+.I’ve widened the spikes so they’re more rounded to get more area but it’s absolutely not the effect I want.Any suggestions? This has been vexing me for weeks now.
During my free trial period i had a document that i've amended and saved several times. the free period has ceased and i tried to open the document and an window appears stating the file is damaged (error code 4). this happens with every document that i open. i've paid today to have indesign for the year and the documents still will not open and still gives the error code 4 window. Help.
HiEach time I import an image into Indesign, the image loads okay, but I get the blue swirling ‘loading’ icon that never stops. I can save my document, and the menus still work but I can’t work on the actual page, and the only way I can clear it it to Force quit Indesign using Task Manager. This started about 2 weeks ago, and was fine before and I haven’t made any changes to my PC. I thought maybe it started after an update of Indesign, so I tried reverting to an older version, but still had the same problem.I have tried re-installing Indesign. (version21.3) I use Windows 11.I really hope you can help please? Thanks Chris
InDesign 21.4.1 on Mac Studio M1 Ultra Tahoe 26.5.1. Pretty simple and annoying bug. I am unable to stack/group panels on my workspace. This only pertains to the bottom 1-2 for some reason. You are able to place more panels below I would confidently assume this is a reproducible bug. This has been present for the past few versions but I am just now reporting it. The workspace panel is one of the most important features for InDesign workflow and this is the second (albeit, not as annoying) bug I found that I didn’t even need to try to find… From the gif you can see it seems like the bottom 2 groups cannot be stacked. It doesn’t seem like it matters what panel you grab.
Hello everyone.I always select 2 objects. One of the objects must be a text box.The other object is a non text box object.(Note: Another object is also an image, but when the image is pasted inside the frame, I cannot access it.)Originally, a function of m1b could be specifically used to obtain image frames. But it is invalid for the exceptions mentioned above. So I came up with two solutions: non text objects and text boxes. Now I don't know how to modify the code below to obtain non text boxes. There are attachments. notTextFrames = getThingsWithFilter(items, function (item) { return item.hasOwnProperty('texts') && item.texts.length == 0 }, true); The current issue is that I don't know how to modify the code for notTextFrames. How to express the antonym of “hasOwnProperty”?Complete code:var doc = app.activeDocument, items = doc.selection,//graphicFrames = getThingsWithFilter(items, function (item) { return item.hasOwnProperty('graphics') && item.graphics.length > 0 },
So not sure if its just me - or I going slowing mad with this, but following the latest update 25.5.1 when I open pre update files and resize a text box all the text shifts down. This happens in both EN and FR docs that I’m using. I’m trying to edit a catalogue with multiple SKUs and text boxes in both languages where everything was lined up and now following text edits its not. Have the adobe gremlins been at work again?
Mac, OS Tahoe 26.3.1 (a)In the past I have had this problem with Illustrator and Photoshop. Now it sometimes appears with InDesign as well. If I try to drag the active window to another place on my screen, by dragging from the top of the window, it disappears behind all other apps currently open. Oddly, any free floating palettes stay on top. If I can still see a part of the window, I can click on it to bring it back to the front. If not, I have to go to the dock to bring it forward. Nothing is lost so this is an annoyance rather than a real problem, but why does it happen and why is it now happening with ID as well as the others?
(05/08/2026, version 21.5, updated yesterday) Glad for the option to delete all AI generated alt-text... if only it would work properly. The remove all button doesn’t recognize the generated alt-text and pretends there is nothing to delete. This document has 208 pages and there is several pictures on each of them. Having AI generated descriptions on our images erodes the trust our clients have in our products, and I had to find roundabout techniques to delete them directly in the exported PDF because as a professional, I can not afford the time to delete them all by hand, one by one in InDesign. Thus, neither me or my colleagues have touched the descriptions : they are as they were generated (without our consent) when this feature was pushed without notice. So the feature should recognize them as AI generated text to be deleted, and just does not. I keep being dissatisfied with how this whole situation have been handled since it’s been reported month ago. Dialog box says “No AI-genera
What a joke of a title I just wrote. Was this feature ever tested? I just had to find out that there has been an Alt-Text on an image published on my companies website that literally describes a black gradient as “a black & white image of a n**e* figure.” I cannot fathom how a feature like this ever made it to production. There is literally no way I believe this was tested beforehand, at least by (cogniscant) humans. Infuriatingly shameful. I do not care that the alt-text has been improved because I am still finding it from when I was affected. I’ve had it disabled since the moment I’ve been able to turn if off and it has still caused nightmares for me. It is even more frustrating that it basically hides in plain sight and I cannot even find the tags. I had been working on this document for hours before I noticed, all because I accidentally moved the box. To keep me sane and also keep my job, I would love to see Alt-Text tags unaffected by objects in-front of them. I can only imag
Hi everyone,I'm trying to create a booklet from InDesign using the following workflow:InDesign, Print Booklet, PostScript file, Adobe Acrobat Distiller, PDFThe problem is that when I select PostScript File as the printer, the PPD is set to Device Independent. Because of this, the paper size and orientation options are grayed out, so I can't specify the correct size for my imposed booklet. As a result, when I distill the PostScript file, the resulting PDF doesn't have the correct page size.I understand that using ADPDF9.PPD would solve this issue,However, I would like to know if there is any way to create a correctly sized PostScript file and then distill it to PDF without installing a PPD, printer driver, or any other additional software. Is there a way to specify the correct page size while using the device independent PPD, or is installing ADPDF9.PPD required for this workflow? Thanks!
When working in InDesign, entire objects (text fields, color areas, linked images) disappear and are no longer displayed. Not even their frames. The layers cannot be selected by clicking on the location where the elements are located. Zooming into the document or changing the view mode doesnt change anything in the visability of the objects. However, the objects are still there in the layers window. Similarly, when exporting a PDF, the invisible objects become visible again. I can make the objects visible again by copying and pasting them onto a new page or by saving an IDML and opening it. However, the objects keep disappearing when working in the file.Tested with GPU turned on and off.
Hello, Why can’t I read ONLINE a text in a PDF file, that comes from a placed pdf? I have a document that contains many PDF visuals (designed separately and placed on to the final combined InDesign document).I export them with InDesign file into a PDF (print), with digital settings format. When this PDF is opened in a browser (Google Chrome), the text from those visuals cannot be find (cmd+f). When opened in Adobe Acrobat, the find function works just fine for all the text in the visuals mentioned above.Any idea how to fix the online search (I need to send a link to users, that they can open online and do their search).Thank you in advance for any ideas to solve this! M.
We use data merge frequently, using the same Excel files and InDesign templates over and over. Over the past week or so, our merges have stopped working, and we get this attached error message. We have removed any placeholders in both InDesign and Excel that are not being used. We have tried creating various .csv files from Excel. What could we be doing wrong, our workflow has not changed. Thank you!
I have been trying to figure this out for several days now. I’m using 2025 InDesign on a Mac. I have one merge file with images that works just fine and I use it all the time. I’m trying to set up a separate merge file with a lot more images. I fixed several errors that were causing me to get the “missing image” error. Despite all that, I now get no errors but a merge file with text and blank boxes where the images should be. I have noticed one other difference between the merge file that works and the one that doesn’t: In the working one, my image frame has the correct column name <<logo>> inside the frame where the image should be, but the one not working does not display any text. Would be so grateful for a solution! And just to cover my bases, yes the column has an @ sign, and yes, I tried putting the spreadsheet in the same folder as the images and using the image file name, which got me the same result: No errors, but the frames are still blank after merge. I even chec
Hola, estoy teniendo problemas exportando html desde InDesign en Mac. El documento corre bien en navegadores de Mac y Windows pero ha sido imposible que lo haga en una tablet Android ¿alguien ha tenido la misma situación?
I have set the default language in my Creative Cloud to English but my InDesign app interface keeps randomly changing the language to my native language. The only, incredibly tiresome solution is to uninstall and the re-install InDesign and HOPE that the interface in is english. Sometimes it is and stays that way maybe even months, but then one morning I open my InDesign and the interface is in my native language again. All other Adobe apps are in English and InDesign is the only app that keeps doing this at random intervals. This is such a waste of time!!!
We're seeing an intermittent crash when quitting InDesign 2026 (v21.5.1.73, macOS 26.5.2, Apple Silicon) while our C++ SDK plugin is loaded. The crash occurs on the VulcanMsgRecv thread, inside a dynamic_cast in VulcanMessage5.dylib, apparently operating on a freed/invalid object (KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS, guard-pattern address). Two independent crash reports, captured on different days, show byte-identical offsets into VulcanMessage5.dylib (only the ASLR base differs), indicating this is a single deterministic code path rather than a generic timing race: Crash 1 (2026-08-11): base 0x1028cc000Crash 2 (2026-08-10): base 0x107784000Both crashes, same relative offsets:0 libc++abi.dylib __cxxabiv1::...dyn_cast_get_derived_info + 81 libc++abi.dylib __dynamic_cast + 562 VulcanMessage5.dylib +1018963 VulcanMessage5.dylib +1003924 VulcanMessage5.dylib +1016405 VulcanMessage5.dylib +1003446 VulcanMessage5.dylib +1059487 VulcanMessage5.dylib +1049008 VulcanMessage5.dylib +1047289 VulcanMessage5.dyli
I’ve been having major issues with InDesign locking up ever since this update. It doesn’t crash so it doesn’t send a report either. At least two times every day, I need to either force quit the app or restart. It is very frustrating!
First of all, if you have your Adobe set to Automatically update your apps, you’ll want to turn that off. I went into settings, because I was sure I had autoupdates off. But as it turned out (and I swear I don’t remember setting this), you can have autoupdates selectively off on an app by app basis. And for some reason mine WAS set to autoupdate InDesign. Like others, I also lost all of my PDF presets when InDesign updated to 2025, but if you are on a Mac, you can go to the place on your drive where Adobe stores those presets, and restore that folder from Time Machine. I restored that folder to yesterday, and I got all my Adobe PDF presets back again. User-defined PDF Presets: /Users/[username]/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe PDF/Settings I also set the Mac to only open INDD and INDT in the 2024 version of InDesign. If you let it open them in 2025, it requires a “Save As” instead of “Save” on any files you worked on, and once you save them from 2025, no one
Hey gang,I’ve been meaning to ask this question for 26+ years: In Preferences > Advanced Type > Character Settings… why are Superscript and Subscript size settings set to 58.3% ? Is that size arbitrary? Is there any typesetting history behind that oddly-specific size choice?
