InDesign AI Assistant just launched in public beta and we are excited for you to try it. What is AI Assistant in InDesign? It's your conversational partner built directly within InDesign. It can help you build skills and create production-ready InDesign documents faster. Instead of digging through tutorials, simply ask the AI Assistant "How do I create a table of contents?" and learn as you go. Or save time by having it set up your layout and apply bulk text/image/style edits with a single prompt. Why it mattersDesigners spend a huge amount of time on repetitive tasks and navigating menus, and when you get stuck, context-switching to YouTube or Help pages breaks your flow. AI Assistant changes that: Speed up your workflow: Automate multi-step workflows with natural language prompts. Guidance on demand: Get instant, in-context answers without leaving the app. Stay in your creative flow: Fewer interruptions, more designing. How to Save an InDesign File for Older Versions (IDML) Did you know? InDesign files aren't backward compatible by default - a .indd file saved in InDesign 2024 simply won't open in InDesign CC 2019. But there's a simple workaround: export as IDML. What is IDML?IDML (InDesign Markup Language) is an open, XML-based file format that acts as a universal bridge between InDesign versions. Any version of InDesign from CS4 onwards can open an IDML file - making it the go-to format when collaborating with colleagues or clients on older software. But backward compatibility is only half the story. IDML is also one of the most reliable ways to recover a corrupted InDesign file. Because IDML is XML-based rather than binary, exporting a damaged .indd to IDML and then reopening it often strips out the corruption that's causing crashes, freezes, or "cannot be opened" errors - even when other recovery methods fail. Many InDesign users keep this trick in their back pocket specifically for emergencies, no
All quotes in my text are made with right doble quotation marks on either side of the quote. How can I change them into 66 99?See image attached :) BIG thanx in advance to all you clever and kind people!
I want to create new paragraph styles named “a1” and ‘a2’ under the “AA” group. When creating them:I’ll first check if “a1” and ‘a2’ already exist; if so, I won’t create them again, but I’ll move them into the “AA” group. If a1 and a2 do not exist, create them.
According to the stars, Master pages as a name is unacceptable. Who in their right mind cares about it?
None of my adobe services are working. I have tried everything I can, can someone help me?These are screenshots of what happens when I try to open any of my apps.
(InDesign 21.5.1, Windows 11 Pro)There have been (are) several problems with InDesign’s Undo feature, to which a new one (as far as I know) can be added: when you Save As a document, the undo stack is no longer removed. This is a problem because over time, a document’s size can increase enormously. Reported here:https://indesign.uservoice.com/forums/601180-adobe-indesign-bugs/suggestions/51605780--save-as-doesn-t-clear-the-undo-stack
Hi all,Need help in creating a floor plan via a hand drawn PDF.There is a background that the floor plan will go on.What do I do first? Open the background, import the PDF, draw the lines, etc?Any help is greatly appreciated. I gather I do this with layers, but can't find any real help via tutorials on same. Many thanks 🙂
InDesign. I'm rearranging chapters, and I'm moving pages rather than text because I've already set all the text box sizes to avoid widows & orphans. But instead of moving smoothly forward and backward from one page to the next in the text, at the ends of chapters it now jumps to a completely different page (presumably the one it used to be next to). This is maddening! What can I do about it?
I am teaching an introduction to Design in journalism for my undergraduate students. What are some good tutorials they can watch?
I am using InDesign 21.3, working on a simple 2 page file, I go to place a logo and the blue thinking wheel pops up and doesn’t go away. I can click and move things around but none of it is being “saved”. I close the file and click to close the program and it just sits there still open. I then have to force quit the program. When I relaunch the file opens with the software and everything I did while the wheel was spinning was not saved. It’s done this several times since the update and there is no pattern to why. I’m finding it randomly acting up. It’s really frustrating, especially when I’m not working on anything complicated.

I’m using data merge for a set of labels. The labels have different colours. I use a path ‘@image from Excel for solid block colours (JPGs) to achieve the different colours in the data merge. I’ve been trying to apply the colours to a white shape (mono TIF) in Indesign with the overlay effect but can’t get it to just colour the white shape and then not effect the photo in the background. I’ve tried isolation and knockout options but can’t achieve the effect I want. I originally tried setting an object style but couldn't get it to work that way. Is what I’m trying even possible?
For the past month or two, any time I try to Place a file or update a Placed file, InDesign usually freezes. The cursor turns into the spinning circle. I can close and save the files after this, but cannot close the InDesign app. I try various ways to place the files. File > Place or Ctrl D or copy and paste the placed file from another InDesign file. The files I use are typically on my Google Drive and I’ve installed the Drive app on my machine. This is REALLY getting annoying. Adobe used to be so good with bugs. Any ideas? I’ve read a few posts that say they thought version 21.3 fixed this issue but I’ve still got it.I’ve reset preferences, cleared old versions of InDesign, reinstalled InDesign. InDesign 21.4.1 on Mac Studio M1 Ultra Tahoe 26.5.1. Pretty simple and annoying bug. I am unable to stack/group panels on my workspace. This only pertains to the bottom 1-2 for some reason. You are able to place more panels below I would confidently assume this is a reproducible bug. This has been present for the past few versions but I am just now reporting it. The workspace panel is one of the most important features for InDesign workflow and this is the second (albeit, not as annoying) bug I found that I didn’t even need to try to find… From the gif you can see it seems like the bottom 2 groups cannot be stacked. It doesn’t seem like it matters what panel you grab.
Ever since the update in November last year we have not been able to successfully export any files that contain placed InDesign files to PDF. I placed a post in the community forums last year where multiple other people experienced the same issue but now that post is gone without being addressed so I am posting it here again.Last year the exported PDFs resulted in low resolution images regardless of what export settings were used. Now we aren’t even able to generate a PDF with constant errors. The reason we used placed InDesign files is so that if any changes are made to the original we’ll know because the file will show as modified. I do not want to copy and paste the InDesign file or place a separate file like a PDF or JPG as that doubles our work and doesn’t guarantee us that we will make sure all files are up-to-date. We’re using InDesign 21.2 on a 24 inch M1 Mac - everything was working fine until the latest update and we can’t afford to revert back to the previous versions now.I n
The image on the left has 2 panels of gradient with a multiply effect in InDesign the image on the right is how it exports to PDF.I’ve had this issue constantly for weeks, along with other issues that Adobe just won’t fix it’s getting to be a nightmare to use this crappy software.I’ve tried every different PDF export option and compatibility setting there is it doesn’t help. With the exception that sometimes but not always, interactive PDF rarely fixes the issue.I’ve changed the colour profiles too but doesn’t help. It’s to the point where I can’t work using CC so will need to change my whole company over to Affinity if they don’t start fixing some of these bugs.I’m still having this issue here that Adobe can’t fix, not sure it they are related.
Hello! So my team and I have been adding alt text to images in PhotoShop and then using Object Export Options with “From XMP: Alt Text (Accessibility)” selected for the Alt Text Source. In InDesign, this works great. We can see the alt text. But it does not seem to transfer to PDF when exported. We have triple checked that the “Create Tagged PDF” option is selected when exporting to PDF. What are we doing wrong? Object Export Options exampleExport options selected
Affects: Indesign 19.5 and 20.0.1 (across iMac and Macbook Pro)Steps I tried to resolve issue:Reinstalling latest Indesign (20.0.1), restarting my iMac, reverted to a previous version of ID (19.5), copied the file to my desktop to open from there, started a fresh document and tried to create new Styles (doesn't let me), opened another document which has styles that worked (they also don't work any more), deleted preferences, and finally I have updated my iMac and that hasn't fixed it either.Expected result:Font Styles panel should work as it should be (and as it did 3 days ago before the weekend. Have no idea what has changed!) in that you click on a Style and it applies it instantly. I should not have to Right Click/Apply Style. Actual Result:Cannot select or apply styles from the Style panel. Clicking on the style in the panel makes the selected item flicker, but nothing gets selected or applied and it stays the same default font. I can only change the style if I right click on
What a joke of a title I just wrote. Was this feature ever tested? I just had to find out that there has been an Alt-Text on an image published on my companies website that literally describes a black gradient as “a black & white image of a n**e* figure.” I cannot fathom how a feature like this ever made it to production. There is literally no way I believe this was tested beforehand, at least by (cogniscant) humans. Infuriatingly shameful. I do not care that the alt-text has been improved because I am still finding it from when I was affected. I’ve had it disabled since the moment I’ve been able to turn if off and it has still caused nightmares for me. It is even more frustrating that it basically hides in plain sight and I cannot even find the tags. I had been working on this document for hours before I noticed, all because I accidentally moved the box. To keep me sane and also keep my job, I would love to see Alt-Text tags unaffected by objects in-front of them. I can only imag
Already posted in the Acrobat forum but I think it belongs here.Machine is a Zenbook Duo (Windows 11). When exporting a relatively small (five page) document to PDF, InDesign hangs and never recovers.Workaround is to tick the “Create separate PDF files” checkbox and combine the pages afterwards. Is this a known bug or am I doing something wrong? I’ve used InDesign for years and have never before seen this behavior.
When having a file open in InDesign 2024 on my Macbook Pro (Sonoma 14.2.1 OS), close the lid, plug into my LG UltraFine external monitor and wake the computer up, the InDesign window is still open and all the tool bars are visible and working, but the area where the artwork is becomes black/blank and I can't see the work. I can see the bounding boxes if I select all, but no image or text. The window is entirely blank. The same thing happens if I'm working on my LG monitor, unplug the display and then open the Macbook to work. I always have my Macbook closed when plugged into the LG display and use both an external keyboard and trackpad. The solution is to always save, quit InDesign and reopen. If I go through that it works again. Is it a bug with Apple? Is it a bug with Adobe? My LG firmware, OS and Adobe InDesign are all updated to the latest versions.
