Question

Anyone else frustrated with how buggy InDesign has become?

Examples: Tool cursors not updating to selected tool, Cmd-Z randomly stops working, files grayed out for no reason when importing images, documents refusing to open, double-vision text when changing paragraph styles, wonky dialogue boxes… I could go on and on. Maybe stop bothering me to try AI toys and work the bugs out of your core functionality. It’s not just me, right?

All applications have some bugs but I don’t recognise your characterisation of InDesign being buggy in the way you describe.
Can you detail your version of InDesign and OS and how much RAM and spare hard disk capacity you have. And have you tried resetting the InDesign preferences (found under the General tab in inDesign Prefereences?)

Absolutely, as I just had another one occur... Latest version of InDesign (21.6), MacOS Golden Gate 27.0.1, 24GB RAM, M5 MacBook Pro 1TB (~half storage free).

I just moved a page from one document to another, and now the keyboard shortcut to navigate between pages (Shift-PgUp/Down) doesn’t respond and error beeps. I’ll need to quit and relaunch to restore functionality.

Resetting preferences is 100% a last resort move as I have them highly-customized and tailored to my workflow, developed over years. The amount of downtime required to remember all my custom settings and return to a place where I’m able to work at peak efficiency is not inconsequential.

These little glitches aren’t specific to this version of the app or OS. I’ve been noticing a slide toward little annoyances like this for a couple of years now. Similar oddities have appeared in Photoshop & Illustrator as well, AND within MacOS itself (little Finder things like double-clicking the last word in a filename now selects the file extension as well, as an example). Things that have worked reliably and dependently for literally decades are seemingly eroding. And seldom demonstrably repeatable — they happen when they happen.

All that said, my post title was more of a rant born out of in-the-moment frustration rather than any specific help or fix I’m looking for. Thanks for listening. 🤣

Recent reports stated that Golden Gate was not compatible (at present) with InDesign.
