P: Introducing the Project Indigo camera app

This post applies to the Project Indigo iOS camera app.

Adobe Labs is excited to share an early look at Project Indigo, an iPhone camera app we've started to develop, to get feedback from the photography community. The app offers full manual controls, a more natural ("SLR-like") look, and high image quality in both JPEG and raw formats. It also introduces some new photographic experiences not available in other camera apps. For more information on the underlying technology, please refer to thiProject Indigo blog post.

Before you start with Project Indigo

  • We recommend using Project Indigo on iPhone 15 Pro/Pro Max or newer devices.
(Also supported are 12 Pro/Pro Max, 13 Pro/Pro Max, and all 14-series devices.)
  • You should have at least 1GB of storage space left for the app, the downloadable AI Models inside the app, and for captured photos.

Recipes for success when using Project Indigo

To get the maximum out of your images captured with the app, follow these guidelines:

  • When reviewing the results, focus on Project Indigo's more natural look (in both SDR and HDR). If you haven’t done this before, try viewing the images on your laptop or desktop device, preferably on an HDR screen.
  • Capture with both JPEG and raw DNGs with file saving enabled. Project Indigo produces computational photography DNG files, which have the same natural look as JPEG images, but much more latitude for editing after capture.
  • Take control of the camera with the built-in Pro Controls, including controls that are exclusive to a computational camera: Frames to Merge and Merge Method. These may be intimidating for beginners, but with Project Indigo, you can try them for free, and nothing will break—you can always reset the settings to ‘Auto’ and let the camera take back control.
  • Go to the Indigo Labs page and play with the latest innovations our team can offer. These are only available on mobile via Indigo!
  • Be patient! Project Indigo is doing a lot of heavy lifting under the hood, and it will reward you with great photos. In return, it may ask you for a bit of time to set up captures when needed, and to wait a few seconds for the image processing to finish.

Sending feedback

Please try the app and share feedback in this community forum thread. If you report a problem you encountered, it would help to include details like which device you are running Project Indigo on, what kind of scene you were trying to capture, what you were trying to achieve with the camera, and as much information as possible about what you like or do not like about the resulting photo quality. Our team will continually monitor this thread to track issues and improve future experiences.

To improve the performance and results of Project Indigo, it is important that examples of images that do not meet your expectations are forwarded to the team via your report.  A large variety of file formats are allowed as attachments in these forum posts. The best option is to attach your image's raw file directly to your feedback post. Note that there is a 50 MB limit on an attachment's file size. If your raw file is too large to attach, the best option is to share the file via a file-sharing service (Dropbox or similar) and then share the link in your feedback post. Thank you for continuing to provide feedback on the Project Indigo camera!

I recently used Indigo heavily for a trip and was just reviewing the photos. My impression of HDR is that sometimes it adds so much to the sense of "being there", and at other times, the overpowering highlights divert attention from the focus of the photo. I feel that often, Indigo's HDR highlights (relative to the subjects) are even more overpowering than the default iOS camera's highlights.

I don't know if there's a way to fix this programmaticly, maybe do some AI subject detection and limit number of HDR stops against median subject brightness? Or add per-shot setting to control allowed HDR stops, alongside exposure, etc.

What you are bringing up are legitimate concerns, but the solution is partially always going to be subjective - what is overexposed to you may not be to someone else and vice versa. Indigo team will continue optimizing our AI model which analyzes the image and computes the SDR and HDR "looks", and one way to improve it is to simply add more manually edited scenes in the training dataset where the bright highlighs are appropriately amplified or reduced.

My experience with it is that it seems to be a good starting point that can be finessed to tone down the the HDR highlights and balance the shadows.

Hello - testing the newest release and have selected DNG (only). When I tap on the image I see 'Preview only, tap here to develop the DNG.' That generates a .jpg and will continute to create additional .jpgs. Is this by design? Once it is processed and a .jpg is created why does it auto-generate another file?

We decided to not do book-keeping in the background for such things and let the user control the file output. As Indigo progresses, we will update the processing so you may want to regenerate the JPEG from the DNG to compare, for example. Note that Indigo is experimental and our focus, as a small team, will primarily be on the image capture and processing algorithms - we fully appreciate that UX is a very important part of the app, but it is also one which can take a lot of resources away from the core problems we are trying to solve. In a case like this one, this was a conscious trade-off made by the team, and is something that should not be too difficult for the end user to learn and adapt to.

Hey thanks for responding. After spending hours and hours in the app and purposefully testing it I am delighted with what you've accomplished so far. Keep up the good work. Regarding 'book-keeping' does that apply to the file naming convention as well?

Ich hätte gerne die 48MP und die App in Deutsch dann könnte ich die besser verstehen und bedienen.

Wann kommt die Unterstützung für das iPhone 17pro?

@BorisTheBlade Will there be improvements in futute updates to super res zoom? Specifically in areas where there is moving subjects or high frequency like moving leaves maybe using more interpretation in these areas? Also maybe improving the battery power drain a lot while using this mode because it still drains fast using it and improving its speed to match that of google camera which was instant and then also add the option to shoot 48mp photos on a 12mp bayer sensor by using super res zoom on the full sensor not a crop. I know it will take time but i hope it all ends up happening in a future update!

Thank you very much for the new recent update.

Everything stable on 16 Pro 🙏

It's good that they improved the Performance and make the app more stable. But please please add Different Aspect Ratios in the next Version. 16:9 and 2:1 would be very nice. I really wish I can shoot photos in horizontal mode for presenting on laptop or  TV 🙂

Yes. But when I open it all I get is a black page that lets me know it's not available for me. The app doesn't let me use it.

Hi, I really like Project Indigo so far, but I noticed that it doesn’t seem to support full-resolution output (e.g. 48MP on newer iPhones). Do you plan to add full-res support in a future update, or is this a limitation of iOS/your processing pipeline? Thanks!

Not sure whether it has been asked before: Just checking the DNG only option and the dng file is half the size compared to making the same picture with another app (ProCamera) or the default iPhone app. Anything I missed?

We are not doing anything special with the DNG: it is 12MP (what resolution DNGs are you comparing with?) and it uses lossless JPEG compression for the data (which option are the other apps you are comparing with using?) - it is also bayer raw DNG, not full RGB DNG, which will save space.

I'm comparing the file size: Just made a picture from my desk: Indigo DNG = 11,3MB, iPhone app (and ProCamera app) 27,1 MB: all with 26mm 12 MP

    Hi Adobe folks,

This long thread with random feature requests or standard customer support questions  is difficult to follow at best. Is there a way you can move to more focused discussion on a single feature request or bug report? Also, you keep getting the same question which could easily be answered if people could read a summary of the current status. Just one example would be "hey, iPhone 17 doesn't work, when will you fix it?" even when the application update explicitly says that update is coming soon. A FAQ might help that. At minimum you could just point them to the FAQ.

Hi Russ - thank you for your suggestions. I will think about how to better track feature-related discussions, but those are always challenging even inside the organization, let alone open to the public. Regarding an FAQ, there is already a link to it in the forum post, and it already answers a ton of questions that have been repeatedly asked and answered, and yet... they still keep getting asked. Not sure that can be fixed as most of us tend to come to any kind of a public place and just ask our questions, bypassing the work to first try and see if there is already an anwer. Sadly, the forum platform does not allow for easy searching inside a single post, making things harder.

Great news, that it's possible to shoot DNG-only now. It's awesome that the App gets constantly improved!

But what is still quite annoying is the naming of the images after a share e.g. by Airdrop.

When I transfer a single DNG, it has the somewhat cryptic "Indigo name" on the desktop computer, e.g. “IDG_20250924_112858_457.DNG.” If I activate before sharing the option that "All photo data" should be transferred (even though it is only a single DNG), the airdrop creates a directory with the "Indigo name" and the image is stored within this folder with a name in the format "IMG_nnnn.DNG", e.g. "IMG_5033.DNG. I much prefer this because it fits in with the naming convention (and order) of the images that I did not take with Pi.

Is it possible to implement consistent naming? Ideally, with the option to choose whether you want the "Indigo name "or the "OS name" like "IMG_nnnn".

Thank you for sharing your feeback on the updated app. We heard many users complaing that forcing DNG+JPEG is making life more difficult, so we decided to prioritize solving that problem.

Regarding filenames, Indigo names are not as cryptic as they may seam:

    • IDG (for Indigo)
    • _date (in your example, 24th of September, 2025)
    • _time (11h 28m 58s)
    • _time-in-milliseconds (since you may have captured more than 1 photo the same second).

Unfortunately, we have no control over how Apple does file transfer via AirDrop. When 'All Photos Data' is turned on, under-the-hood mechanism of some kind renames the photos. I will check with the team if there are any technical difficulties in offering unique file names in format of 'IMG_XXXX'. It may make it harder to find Indigo captures together with others, for one thing.
