This post has been updated. Speech to Text is only on-device in Beta for all supported languages.

Check out Speech to Text, which is now running on device instead of using a Cloud service. Not only does this allow you to work offline, but we are also able to provide some performance improvements.

Tell us about quality, performance and accuracy by using this feedback form: https://forms.office.com/r/VX8rZA0qR7

You can also post in this thread:

  • Machine specs
  • How long were the transcriptions (minutes, seconds)
  • How accurate is it?
  • How good was performance and stability?
  • Were there any transcripts that worked worse than others (kids, accents, multiple voices)?
  • Would you want profanity to be flagged or omitted for any reason?

Local transcrption works well. What would mkake this feature even better are some tools to help with correcting the transcription:

  • Find and Replace
  • Add Custom Words to Transcription Database so they are correctly transcribed
  • Quick Captialization for Words in the Transcript that need the first letter Capitalized.

Thank you for your feedback.

Find and replace is already available in all tabs of the text panel. You can expand the replace-bar via first entering text into the search field and then pressing the (here blue) replace button.

Thank you for your other suggestions - we have a lot of improvements still in progress and will take your input into account. Editing transcripts will become even better in the future!

Best regards,

 Alexander

Thanks, Alexander! The icon for that wasn't obvious to me.

Perhaps there is a more intuitive icon to show replacement.

Finally, I felt the beauty of creating signatures. As soon as you changed the algorithm, everything worked. Just don 't spoil it in the new updates ) So far, everything is working. Thanks

The endings of some words allow you to make adjustments. But, it's not scary. According to profanity, I would like to see a solid selection in red with the opportunity to pay attention to it and be able to remove it, after making adjustments.

  • Would you want profanity to be flagged or omitted for any reason?

Yes, please. Or at least some sort of toggle to keep it when specified. I find half of the transcript are profanities when the video was just a school project presentation. For example, everytime somebody says "should" the transcript thinks it is "sh*t" and same goes for any words that end with "tion" or "sion", it also thinks it is "sh*t". Imagine if I didn't check it and send this presentation off, horrible stuff would happened.

Other than that, it seems to be fairly accurate and I quite like it so far.

This is great news!  Our client wants no part of Cloud services.  Will you be adding the ability to upload an approved script to work along side the Transcribe process?  I have done some testing and this is currently possible using YouTube but we of course can not use this do to the types of videos we produce.  Our videos can be from 30-60 minutes long and as truly great as the current Transcribe process is, there are still issues with capitalization, acronyms and more that would be eliminated if we could upload a script.  Also, several months ago a safe margin was added to the Open Captions.  Many people have been asking  Francis Crossman to remove this safe guard since he asked the group our opinion way back in the Spring of 2021.  Do you know if this will be happening?

Beta 22.1.1 Build 33. The "local" selection option is not in the Create Transcript. I was in "local" mode and it still works. Is the selection missing? Or has it been moved?

Edit: I said Build 133; it is, of course, build 33.

Thanks Teresa,

So it now runs ONLY on device, and no longer in the cloud? I wondered if only for English, but when I selected Spanish, it still ran locally. Very nice! Faster for sure.

Id liek to answer two fo the questions asked:

  • Would you want profanity to be flagged or omitted for any reason?

I would like to be able to turn off and on when needed locally.   A local database that has the ability to 'bleep' out if you turn it on.   This is a more universal way to handle it giving choice.

  • Will you continue to use this? If not, why not?

If this works well, for accuracy and speed, I will likely use it more often (or even exclusive) vs cloud.  Cloud would have to better than local for me to not want to do local as I prefer high accuracy + speed - so depends on exactly how well it ends up working vs the cloud version.

Thanks for explaining this, Teresa. And yes, a very useful improvement.

Being able to transcribe on my computer is super important for me. Thanks for adding that.

I'm working on a a couple journalism projects where the production team want to minimize relying on cloud services, especially for sensitive content. Yes, I know about your encryption feature and deletion policies, but the producers are keeping the main editing systems as air-gapped as possible, and transcribing locally gives them one less thing to worry about (even if the worry is misplaced; they have enough other things to worry about).

Also: Thanks for adding timecode to the text exports. That's really helpful too for sharing raw transcripts with the creative time. Paper edits are still a thing. 🙂
