Speech to Text Adds Norwegian, Swedish and Dutch

We have added Norwegian (Bokmal), Swedish and Dutch to the Transcription Panel in Premiere Pro. Since I don't speak any of these languages I would love to know how well they are working for you. Please try some of your footage and let us know:

  • What kind of content are you transcribing? (zoom call, promotional video, YouTube DIY tutorial, Netflix documentary...)
  • Does it do better with certain dialects? If there are regional dialects that it doesn't handle as well, be specific about the names of the region, accent or dialect.
  • How accurately does it transcribe numbers? (1984, February 1st)
  • How accurately does it handle pop culture (movies, current events, famous people)?
  • Will you use it in its current state?

Have you removed Norwegian? If you have, is there any of the later versions which i can use it?

I can't find it in the add-ons on CC and there is nothing in premiere pro either.

Have been testing Dutch. In general the results are amazing when transcribing a news presenter and a professional voice over. Compliments. What is odd that, specifically with the voice over, that dates/years are not transcribes consequently. As the voice over does multiple takes. 1684 (or some other year) is sometimes transcribed correctly, but also as two separate numbers 16  84, as text sixteen eighty four, and once as a combination of numbers and text. Not a great deal, but since you asked about it. Happy to share the files if you send me your direct email.

Hi Joost, thank you for your input!

It would be great if you could share files with me where the transcription for numbers is not working well. Feel free to send me a direct message, thanks!

I would like to know when these elanguages will be available in the standard Premiere releases? Currently I only find them in the beta versions. Is it anywhere on the roadmap? It would be nice to start using it in our day-to-day workflow.

That's good. How about a language that is spoken by over 350 Million people - Arabic! Many productions that are airing on Neflix or other major TV stations in the Middle East are in Arabic. Speech to Text in Arabic can immensely help create captions faster and easier to later tranasalte to English or other languages. Thanks

I can report amazing result with Dutch!

I tried 2 daily news shows of us here at Omroep Gelderland and they seem to transcribe very good.

Even with strange foreign names.

Transcription of a live show like (Zomer in Gelderland) length of 36 minutes took about 10 minutes on a Intel I7 2600k PC (old hardware!)

While the news got very little errors, a live show like Zomer in Gelderland still seems to be a challenge.

I have made a demo of the two shows, here you can see how automatic transcription works compare to our human created subs.

The top subs a done by our subtitle department,

the lower subs are done in Premiere Pro beta.

This is the download link for the two shows.

Here is another one for numbers in Dutch.

Voice over say:  2450 meter

Transcribe to 24, 100, 50 meter which is exactly the way we say that but not the way we write those numbers.

Thanks for your feedback, Ann! Would it be possible to share an audio file with me for which you're seeing the numbers transcribed like this?

I tested the dutch language. It works OK. But if we use a english word or name for example harry styles it will give me ''harries titels'' Some words we also use in english like, cool or nice ore someting like that.

Hi Denise, Thanks for sharing. "Loan words," especially from English, is something we haven't solved but we are investigating. I'm glad you brought it up as part of your testing.
