Keyword order in search

Hi 

I am trying to understand why the search engine returns a different number of images depending on the order in which the keywords are entered.

If I search for "england cottage" I get 27,613 images, AND

If I search "cottage england I get 27,613 images

If I search "english cottage" I get 1,282,804 images returned, BUT

If I search "cottage english" I only get 23,924

Any ideas why?

It may well be a ranking "issue".

I think it might have something to do with keyword rank, i.e. the position in which the keyword is listed on the asset. I searched for "English cottage" (in quotes) and got 1.2M hits. When I searched for "cottage English" I got 0 hits.
