Video upscaling issues when using Topaz Labs Astra

I'm trying to upscale a 36-second video. Since the maximum supported video length is 20 seconds, I split it into two separate clips and retried the process. The first clip upscaled successfully and looks great, but the second clip consistently fails. In some cases, it runs for a few minutes before displaying a "Something went wrong" error. Other times, it processes for 15–30 minutes and then disappears entirely without producing a result. I even upgraded to the premium plan in hopes that it would resolve the issue, but unfortunately it hasn't made any difference. At this point, I've attempted to complete this process close to 100 times, and I've only had one successful result. I'm not sure why this issue persists, especially since the first half of the same video works without any problems. I'd appreciate any help in identifying what's causing the second clip to fail and how I can successfully complete the upscale.

Sorry, I have not used it in Firefly, but I use the Video upscale in Topaz Studio a fair bit, and have never had it fail.  It’s always worth asking the Google Ai summarizer about this sort of problem.  It is very good at rounding up all the advice given since for ever, and rounding it up for you.

    Hi @Alex Thomsen,

We're sorry to hear you're running into this issue. Since the first clip processes successfully while the second clip repeatedly fails, we'd like to better understand what's different about the second file.

Could you please try the following:

    • Export the second segment as a completely new video file rather than using a trimmed version of the original video.
    • Try reducing the clip length further to see if a shorter segment processes successfully.
    • Test the workflow in another browser or an incognito/private window.
    • Clear your browser cache and sign back into your Adobe account.

    Regards,

    Tarun

I'm not entirely sure how to do that, and it also seemed like HandBrake required me to purchase additional credits to convert the file, which I wasn't interested in doing. Instead, I converted the video to a .mov file and then used an online converter to create a new .mp4 file. After that, I split the new MP4 into two parts and uploaded the second half again, but it still failed with the same "Something went wrong" error. So even after converting the video to a completely new file, the issue persists specifically with the second portion of the video.

The fact that you’ve managed to process the second clip successfully at least once is the part that stands out to me. If the clip itself were actually unsupported or corrupted, I’d expect it to fail every time, not once out of a hundred attempts.

That makes me wonder if the issue is happening during processing rather than with the video itself.

One question: did you split the video by simply trimming it, or did you export the second half as a completely new file? I’ve seen AI video tools behave differently depending on how a clip was created. If it’s just a trimmed section, exporting only the second half as a fresh file might be worth trying.

After your response, I decided to try upscaling the first part again to see if it was just a temporary issue. It worked on the first attempt, just as before. I then tried upscaling the second part twice, but both attempts failed with the "Something went wrong" error. I also duplicated the second clip and saved it as a new file, thinking the original file might be corrupted, but that didn't help either. Next, I split the original 36-second video into two parts again and repeated the process. Once again, the first half upscaled successfully, while the second half failed with the same "Something went wrong" message. To rule out the clip length as the issue, I split the video into even smaller segments. Unfortunately, the result was the same: the system can upscale any segment from the beginning of the original video, but every segment that starts later in the original video fails. At this point, it seems like there's something specifically preventing the latter portion of the original video from being processed. It's really frustrating because I need the entire 36-second video to be upscaled, not just the first half.

Since every clip from the beginning works, but anything from later in the timeline fails, I’d stop looking at the split itself. It sounds like Astra is running into something in that part of the source video.

If you haven’t already, I’d try transcoding the entire 36-second video with HandBrake or FFmpeg first, then split that new file and upload the clips again. Re-exporting only the second half doesn’t always rebuild the entire video stream, whereas transcoding the whole file does.

If the newly transcoded file still fails at roughly the same point, I’d say you’ve done enough troubleshooting to show this is probably an issue Adobe needs to investigate rather than something you’re doing wrong.
