"Advanced 3D" Renderer Crash in Chinese Language Version

Installation Path: Pure English characters only

Issue Summary: Enabling the "Advanced 3D" renderer in the Chinese language version of After Effects causes the application to crash with the error "Advanced 3D plug-in generated an unexpected exception". It is hypothesized that this is a localization bug related to the non-English characters in the Chinese translation "高级 3D".
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Ensure After Effects language is set to Chinese.
2. Create a new composition.
3. Create a layer (e.g., shape layer or text layer).
4. In Composition Settings or the Layer panel, switch the renderer to "Advanced 3D".
5. Enable the 3D switch for the layer.
6. The application crashes instantly.
Expected Result: The "Advanced 3D" renderer should be enabled successfully, and 3D features should work as intended.
Actual Result: After Effects crashes with the error message: "After Effects can't continue: Advanced 3D plug-in generated an unexpected exception.". This issue may also be present in other localized versions using non-Latin characters, such as Traditional Chinese, Japanese, and Korean.
Environment Information:
Adobe After Effects Version: 2026 (and 2025)
Operating System: Windows 11

@David.Arbor Oh, by the way! The English version of After Effects doesn't crash when using Advanced 3D, even if the computer name contains Chinese characters. Note that it's the computer name, not the Windows username.

@David.Arbor I found a solution for the "Advanced 3D" renderer crash on Chinese social media that dates back several years—simply changing the computer name to English. This confirms that the issue has persisted for quite a long time.

@David.Arbor

My After Effects is installed in the default location on the C: drive. Additionally, I just changed my computer name to English in Windows settings. Now, it doesn't crash when enabling the "Advanced 3D" renderer. Interestingly, it also didn't crash before when the computer name contained Chinese characters as long as I was using the Japanese version of After Effects.

Hi @iSec_1234,

We fixed an issue last year where Advanced 3D was crashing if there were unicode characters in your Windows username. But this sounds different. Are you by any chance installing AE on a drive other than C:\.

Thanks,

Update:
I have tested the Japanese and Korean versions. Only the Japanese version works correctly after switching the After Effects renderer to "Advanced 3D," while the Korean version continues to crash. This is a critical issue. Adobe’s extensive localization has traditionally lowered the learning curve and attracted a vast user base. However, the new 3D model features in the 2026 version rely on the "Advanced 3D" renderer, which is currently suffering from these severe stability issues. As a result, users of the Simplified Chinese and Korean versions are unable to utilize this core update.
