AE 2023 (23.6.9.2) crashes at launch after Camera Raw updated to 18.7.0.2743 (also AE 2021 / 2022). AE 2020, 2025 and Beta start fine.

Issue:
After Effects 2023 (23.6.9.2) crashes immediately at startup, before any project is opened. The crash occurs in the plug-in loading phase (PLUG_Search / BirthPlugins) when the shared Camera Raw plug-in (18.7.0.2743) is loaded. AE 2021 (18.4.6.2) and AE 2022 (22.6.0.3) show the same startup crash. AE 2020, AE 2025 and AE Beta on the same PC start normally. AE 2024 is not installed. Renaming Camera Raw.8bi lets AE 2023 start normally. I still use AE 2023 for work, so I would like to know if there is a proper fix.

Context:
AE 2023 worked normally before Oct 10, 2026 (I used it the day before). On Oct 10 I updated, via Creative Cloud, the beta builds of Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro and After Effects, plus Photoshop 2025 and Illustrator 2025. The Creative Cloud update history shows Camera Raw was updated to 18.7 on the same day.

Test results (launch only, no project opened):
With Camera Raw.8bi in place (Camera Raw 18.7.0.2743):
- AE 2020: starts
- AE 2021: crashes at startup
- AE 2022: crashes at startup
- AE 2023: crashes at startup
- AE 2025: starts
- AE Beta: starts
With Camera Raw.8bi renamed to Camera Raw.8bi.bak:
- All of the above versions launch.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Have Camera Raw 18.7.0.2743 installed in:
   C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CC\File Formats\Camera Raw.8bi
2. Launch After Effects 2023 (23.6.9.2).
3. AE crashes during startup.

Expected result:
AE starts normally.

Actual result:
AE crashes at launch. The crash logs (attached) share the same pattern:
- Crashed thread: BirthPlugins -> PLUG_Search -> Camera Raw -> LoadLibraryExW of a DLL from the same Common Files folder
- Access violation in Mtx_destroy in MSVCP140.dll 14.0.24210.0, loaded from each AE's own Support Files folder, called during DLL initialization (initterm)
- AE 2022 and AE 2023: the DLL being initialized is onnxruntime.dll 1.24.4 (shipped with Camera Raw). A second crash follows a few seconds later: fail-fast 0xc0000409 with error code 0x8007045a (ERROR_DLL_INIT_FAILED), raised from microsoft.ai.machinelearning.dll 1.24.4.
- AE 2021: the DLL being initialized is adobe_c2pa.dll (also from the Common Files folder).

Observations (my analysis of the crash logs, not confirmed):
- AE 2021, 2022 and 2023 each load their own old MSVCP140.dll (14.0.24210.0) from their Support Files folder, while the DLLs shipped with the new Camera Raw (onnxruntime 1.24.4, adobe_c2pa) appear to expect a newer VC++ runtime (the system has 14.50). This looks like a runtime version mismatch.
- AE 2022 and 2023 also load their own, much older onnxruntime.dll (1.11 and 1.15) in the same process as Camera Raw's 1.24.4.
- I do not know why AE 2020, 2025 and Beta are not affected.

Workaround:
Renaming Camera Raw.8bi to Camera Raw.8bi.bak lets AE 2023 start and open existing projects without problems. (This disables RAW import in AE 2023 and affects other Adobe apps that share the file until restored.)

Version / system info:
- OS: Windows 11 Pro 25H2, OS build 26200.9457 (the crash logs report 10.0.26100.9444; I am not sure why the build differs)
- CPU: Intel Core i9-9900K @ 3.60GHz
- RAM: 64 GB
- GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti, Game Ready Driver 591.86 (Jan 27, 2026); Intel integrated graphics present (no display attached)
- Camera Raw: 18.7.0.2743 (shared, in Common Files)
- Other Adobe apps: Photoshop 2025, Illustrator 2025, and the beta builds of Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro and After Effects

Attached: the .crash files from AE 2023 (2 files), AE 2022 (2 files) and AE 2021 (1 file).

Is this a known issue, and is there a recommended way to use AE 2023 alongside the newer Camera Raw? Thank you.

Hey, thanks for sharing all these details! I’d recommend giving Rob’s suggestion a try and using AE 2025 for now. The team is aware of the crash issue and is looking into it.

Thanks for bearing it up. I’ll get back when there’s an update.

Feel free to reach out if there are any other questions.

    Thanks,

    Nishu

It might be easiest just to open the project in 2025.
