After Effects 2025 crashing when importing video

I'm having a problem with the After 2025 version and also with the latest beta version of After 2025. When adding a video to the project, after a certain amount of time, After crashes. I can't find the space and see the preview of the video. When saving, it crashes with the file saving pop-up. I need to force close it and open it again. After a certain amount of time, it gives the same problem again.

Note: whether or not you import a PSD, it gives the error. When you open After and import only the video file, it gives the problem.

I didn't have this problem in After 2024.

I currently use a Mac with macOS Sequoia 15.3.1.

Hi Nishu, have tried the latest beta version 25.6 but still freezes shortly after impoting video. And still not working on ae25.3.2. Absolutely crazy to not be able to import video, especially as prices are going up! Very disappointing

Hi Matthew,

What type of media are you trying to import? Is it happening with a specific type of media? What happens after it freezes? Does it crash? Are there any crash reports?

Thanks,
Nishu

Updating, the latest AE version finally seems to work on all video playback without crashing. I have only used it a little bit but wanted to leave an update. Anyone else seems to have their issue resolved? I'm using a Macbook Pro M3.

I'm experiencing exactly the same issue in After Effects 2025 (versions 25.3.1 and earlier) also on the Beta Version. I've tested both H.264 .mp4 files and ProRes 422 .mov files. In my case, the application crashes randomly—either during playback or when scrubbing the timeline. The viewport stops updating altogether, although the UI remains partially responsive: I can still select and move layers but the preview window doesn’t refresh at all.

When I try to save my project after the the preview freezing up, the save dialog appears and seems to process the action—sometimes even completing it—but then freezes on screen, and I can no longer interact with anything. The same happens when I try to open Preferences or clear the cache after the crash: the UI elements open but immediately become unresponsive. I have to restart my computer to get out of it.
I've already gone through all the obvious troubleshooting steps—checked audio settings, display configurations, memory and performance preferences—but nothing has resolved the issue so far.

I recently got a new Lenovo Legion with 64GB RAM and an RTX 590 GPU. I installed AE 2025 (including the beta), and the issue occurs consistently across both versions. I've now reverted to AE 2024 just to be able to get some work done.

Hey Kevin, I have same issue, everything working perfect, but when I am adding mp4 file to composition, the preview is not working, and for example the "Auto-save" pop-up is not closing. I am using MAC os too.

Hi all,

Sorry for the delayed response. Some performance-related bugs have been fixed and shipped in the beta version of After Effects. Do you mind giving it a try? I am not able to replicate this issue in the beta version. Here's how you can install the beta app: https://adobe.ly/45zaFKH

Thanks,
Nishu

Same problem, with newer versions, I think it's more when I import .mov, I hope they solve it.

@AM-S Why? Do you really think being able to import a video clip into a video editing software without it crashing is more important than stuffing it with new AI features nobody really asked for? Do you really think us, mere paying users, are more important than the SACRED SHAREHOLDERS?

@Kevin-Monahan Is there any update on this bug, was your team able to repliacte the issue with project files submitted by myself and others? As we're a couple of months down the line now from the original posting, would be good to get this resolved as soon as possible. Thanks.

Just came in to bump up the thread and say I seem to have the same issue in AE 25.2.2 on M1 Mac (though I hadn't linked it with footage).
Safe mode or not, plugins or not, updated AE, and reinstalled AE, updated again.

I'm up to 41 crashes so far today and it's only lunchtime. (Sidenote: Won't have time to eat lunch today because I am stupidly using AE for a client project with a real deadline and the crashing is delaying me too much. Something to keep in mind when choosing software for the next project.)

I'm trying guillaumeg71622890's suggestion, and I'll see if that helps.

EDIT : switching from Mercury Software Only to GPU Software Acceleration in Project Settings seem to have fixed the issue for now.

Same problem here in After Effects 25.1. Currently working with MOV iPhone footage, but had the same problem with mp4 footage also. After a a minute or so composition window no longer updates. I can save my work but the save pop-up does not disappear. If I try to quit I get a spinning ball and from there I can only force-quit.

Footage is 29.97 fps and the comp is 23.976 fps, if that helps.
