After Effects 26.3 crashes with RenderTaskManager "GetOriginalProject() is null" and random 0xC0000005 crashes

Issue

After Effects 26.3 repeatedly crashes during normal editing.

The crashes are not limited to one project or one specific plugin.

I have experienced crashes while using:

• BMF Map Ramp
• Linear Color Key
• Gradient Overlay
• Cinema 4D Renderer

The crashes also occur during unrelated editing operations.

Because the issue occurs across multiple unrelated plugins and features, it does not appear to be caused by one specific third-party plugin.

--------------------------------------------------

Internal Error

Sometimes After Effects displays the following message before closing:

<RenderTaskManager> <1> Destructor:
GetOriginalProject() is null

Immediately afterwards After Effects reports:

After Effects has crashed (0,42)

--------------------------------------------------

Other Crash Behaviour

In many cases After Effects closes instantly without showing any Adobe crash dialog.

Windows Event Viewer reports:

Application:
AfterFX.exe

Exception Code:
0xC0000005

Sometimes Windows crash dumps are generated.
Sometimes no crash dump is generated at all.

The After Effects logs folder is also often empty after the crash.

--------------------------------------------------

Hardware / Environment

After Effects 26.3

Windows 11

CPU:
Intel Core i9-14900KF

GPU:
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Ti

RAM:
128 GB DDR5

Motherboard:
ASRock Z790 Pro RS WiFi

--------------------------------------------------

Troubleshooting Already Performed

To rule out hardware problems I have already completed the following:

• Clean NVIDIA Studio Driver installation using DDU
• DISM
• SFC
• CHKDSK
• GPU OCCT VRAM test (passed)
• GPU OCCT 3D Adaptive test (passed)

The PC manufacturer has also:

• Replaced the CPU
• Replaced the graphics card
• Updated the motherboard BIOS

Despite these hardware replacements the crashes continue.

--------------------------------------------------

Expected Result

After Effects should continue working normally.

--------------------------------------------------

Actual Result

After Effects crashes randomly.

Sometimes it crashes silently with 0xC0000005.

Sometimes it displays:

<RenderTaskManager> <1> Destructor:
GetOriginalProject() is null

before closing.

--------------------------------------------------

Question

Is

RenderTaskManager
GetOriginalProject() is null

a known issue in After Effects 26.3?

Could Adobe investigate whether this error originates from the RenderTaskManager subsystem?

If additional debugging builds or logging options are available, I would be happy to test them.

    Hey Cocoa,

Thanks for the detailed report and for documenting the troubleshooting you've already completed.

The fact that the crashes occur across multiple unrelated effects and editing operations makes this especially useful. The RenderTaskManager / GetOriginalProject() is null message is also valuable because it gives us something specific to correlate against other crash reports.

At the moment I haven't found documentation identifying that specific message as a known issue, but I'll pass this along for investigation.

If possible, could you also let us know:

    • Does this occur in a brand-new empty project?

    • Does it reproduce with third-party plug-ins temporarily disabled?

    • Is Enable Compressed Frames (Lossless) enabled under Preferences > Disk Cache?

    • Does the issue also occur in 26.2.1, or only after updating to 26.3?

    • If Windows generated a dump, are you able to share it (or the Adobe crash report ID if one appears)?

Thanks again for the thorough report—it makes investigation much easier.

    Cheers,
    Kevin

    Hi Kevin,

Thank you for your reply and for forwarding this issue to the engineering team.

Here are my answers to your questions:

    1. Yes. The crash also occurs in completely new projects, not only in my existing project.

    2. I have not yet tested with all third-party plugins disabled. I will test this and report back.

    3. "Enable Lossless Frame Compression" is currently disabled.

    4. I am not sure yet whether this also happens in version 26.2.1. I will verify this as well.

    5. I have a Windows crash dump from one of the crashes and analyzed it using WinDbg.

    The analysis shows:

    Image Name:
    TDB.dll

    Failure Bucket:
    SOFTWARE_NX_FAULT_INVALID_POINTER_EXECUTE_c0000005_TDB.dll

    Exception Code:
    0xC0000005 (Access Violation)

    The call stack includes:
    - TDB.dll
    - BEE.dll
    - MEE.dll
    - dvacore

In addition, After Effects also hangs during normal preview playback (Application Hang / Event ID 1002 / AppHangB1). In those cases, After Effects stops responding and Windows closes it without generating a new crash dump.

My PC has already been serviced by the system builder:
    - CPU replaced
    - GPU replaced
    - BIOS updated to the latest version
    - NVIDIA Studio Driver clean installed

The crashes still occur after all of these replacements and updates.

If it would help your investigation, I can also provide the Windows crash dump (.dmp) file.

    Thank you for your investigation.
