AFter Effects crashes when pressing Freeze button in roto 3.0

6 out of 10 times Roto Brush 3.0 in After Effects 25.01 (Build 2) crashes the program, I don't have any choice but to Kill it from Task Manager and relaunch again, It crashes at 3 percent generally at the beginning. Restarting the program and doing it again does okay.

My System is
Processor AMD Ryzen 9 7900X 12-Core Processor 4.70 GHz
Installed RAM 64.0 GB
RTX 3060

Windows 11 Pro Version 24H2

Been following this thread, and posted about this myself back in April 2025, haven't received any response. It's still a problem with the software. Roto Brush 3 doesn't "freeze" and continues to propagate endlessly. I can't save the work. I have to render out a video matte, but that's not useful, because I cannot save when I make changes to the roto, to make it better. Similarly, I cannot send crash reports to Adobe, because the software will crash the OS, or it will hang forever, and cannot submit a crash error. I have followed all possible recommendations from Adobe and using Deep Research to help resolve, and it remains a major issue. My post: https://community.adobe.com/t5/after-effects-bugs/roto-brush-any-version-crashes-every-time-i-try-to-freeze/idi-p/15260909

I'm having the same issue. It doesn't matter the format of the video, the length, flushing the prefs and/or cache, moving plugins (using none in my case), having the latest driver installed, the latest version of Adobe CC, etc. Roto Brush 3, 2, and 1 will not only ceaselessly propagate, they will be propagated again during render. Why? Because it is not possible to "Freeze" the Roto Brush after it has done its thing. The pop-up window will come on saying it is executing the "Freeze," but then the app will hang, the pinwheel of death will apear, then the app will read "not responding," and the only way to get out of it is to terminate the app with Task Manager. I did a whole write up on all the various things one could do to optimize and ensure this would work, but to no avail.

I use the jpg sequence for roto, and I do roto max 3 or 4 sec. pieces, the program actually does not close, when I click the Freeze button it gets stuck when the progress dialog opens, and I can't do anything after that nothing appears, I have no other option but to end process from the Task Manager.

Is it on specific pieces of footage, or all video files?

When you say, "it crashes", is that AE actually crashes to the point where there is a crash dialog or is it hanging where AE is not responding?

If it is truly crashing, are you able to submit the crash report with your email address so we can look up the crash?

Hi karmart93!

We understand that you're encountering frequent crashes when using Roto Brush 3.0 in After Effects, and we appreciate you providing your system details. Could you check if there's an update available for your GPU driver? Can you try deleting cache files and resetting preferences

Do you have any third party plugins installed? If so, try temporarily removing it and see if that helps.

Let us know how it goes. Happy to assist.

Thanks,
KR
