After Effects Crashing

Hey everyone, so I've been having this problem recently. Whenever I try to add an effect to any clip whether it is adding them individually or with an adjustment layer. My After Effects stops responding. Does anyone have a solution for this?

What kind of clip (movie)? What version of AE? What system and OS? How much ram? What effects? We have no idea what kind of system you are using, what the format of the movie is, or whether your system meets the minimum system requirements. Everything I mentioned can cause problems.
