After Effects file won't save when AEP gets to 2GB in size

I'm absolutely gutted, I just lost a whole day's work with a following day deadline....

I was working away using RotoBrush which must save all its frozen rotos into the AEP which results in a bloated file. Unbeknownst to me, since there were no errors or warnings, none of my saves actually saved, nor did the auto saves. I only found this out when i went to upload my AEP to send it off to the client, I noticed the "Date Modified" was from this morning, only a few hours after I started working on the project! Same with the autosaves. I went into the recycle bin of my Synology NAS and I found all these temp AEP saves and auto save files all with the same file size in increments of time all through the day until I stopped working, meaning it was trying to save and created a temp file but gave up with no warning (see attached image) The file size being around 2,175,221KB (2.07GB) for every file. When I try opening these up, I get the "After Effects error: missing data in file ( 33 :: 4)".  Same when I try to import it into a new project.  Either it's a weird coincidence that the file stopped saving once it hit 2GB or something else was at play. But why was there no error message when I manually hit save and during autosaves? I'm incredibly frustrated and disappointed and have screwed over a client...  Thanks Adobe!

One year later and I am having this issue. Lost an entire morning of work due to it today. 26.0.0. Can’t save, save as, save a copy. Nothing works. Even still ‘autosaves’ nothing as I work, like a big fat liar.

Had the same thing happen this week. Almost happened again today but fortunately I had my project still open and noticed it woudn't save and I was able to reduce project size and save.

The real issue is that you don't get a warning so you are under the impression that you are actually saving your work. Same goes for auto-saves.

I don't understand that it has been over a year since this has been reported and still nothing. Come on Adobe.

Give us at least a popup with a notifcation.

the current workaround is to make the project smaller - which is not really much of a workaround. I lost a day of work on this a while ago. AE will not save projects files larger than 2GB. It is perhaps a hangover from previous 32bit OS implementaitons. I opened a ticked and reported the issue a year ago.

I just tried After Effects Beta 25.4 and it has the same issue! After more than a year this has not been resolved!

Does anyone have a solution for this? Or a workaround? Does it work on Windows?

The only way to fix your project file is to reduce its size. It's a particularly tricky issue as ae does not let you know that is has not saved the project. I would reccomend splitting the project up. Not ideal.

Hey, I have the same issue, I'm working for a TV project on a deadline and since the project file is 2.14 GB, it just does'nt save anymore. I first thought it had to do with my NAS, as the project was located there, but now when I realized it didn't save I tried saving a copy on my desktop and it also did'nt save. I recorded the process with my phone if this helps. I am absolutely frustrated as I already lost 4 hours of work and I don't know how to proceed with such a limitation! Please help! Working on a Mac M1 64GB, After Effects 25.2.2 (Build 2).

Just had the same expierence, painful lesson. Please have a dialog pop up when saves aren't completed. We save millions and millions of times and need to trust this process works.

Oh this just bit me very badly...again. I spent a number of hours working on a project file that has a bunch of mocap data in it as nul keyframes at 120fps. I had a gap in my vigilance about file sizes and lost hours of studio time as a result. Know this is an issue, it's my fault for not catching this. However, this bug is a genuine issue.

Hi. I am running W11Pro, 13900K, 128GB Ram, RTX 4090, M.2 Storage, AE2024. I have been using AE since the 90s and have never had an issue with AE Saves under 2GB.
