After Effects files crashing on open.

I just got some files from a contractor and I'm unable to open them on my machine.
Files were delivered on a hard drive. I've tried to open from the drive, I also dragged the files onto my desktop and tried to open them. Getting the same error. I've attached a screenshot of the error I'm getting.
Running a 2019 Macbook Pro, with the current version of After Effects. I use AE all the time, and have never had this problem. I've tried renaming the file, resetting my preferences... all the things I've seen online to help with this problem, but they still won't open. Any help would be much appreciated, otherwise I'm going to have to patchwork this thing together.

Thanks Tim,

  • I am using the latest version of SF Pro (as I had to download it from developer.apple and install on my auxillary computer yesterday).
  • I'm on AE Version 22.6.0 (Build 64)
  • I'll give the Beta a try, but probably not today as I have to get these edits done 🙂

Thanks for the response. Just happy that I figured out what the problem was, even if I have to sub out helvetica or something for SF Pro. Worse things have happened.

Hi @weirdtimes ,

Sorry to hear you're having this experience.

Can you please:

  1. Update Apple SF Pro to the latest version available: https://developer.apple.com/fonts/
  2.  Tell which exact release of After Effects you're using, from the After Effects menu > About After Effects.
  3.  If updating SF Pro doesn't help, please install the latest build of After Effects Beta (23.1.0.31 as of today) from the Creative Cloud desktop app and try your project there.

We're aware of some issues that occur with the Apple SF Pro font in After Effects. We've been in contact with Apple about this; some of the problems are related to the font itself, some are related to how After Effects handles the font. Apple has updated the font, and we've made fixes in After Effects, most were made available in After Effects 22.6 but there may be some additional tweaks in the Beta release that could help.

Update 2: I think I figured it out, but it doesn't make any sense to me.
It seems like the problem is SF Pro (Apples brand font fam).
I tried to open the files on a second computer (that just so happened didn't have SF Pro installed).
The file opened, but notified me that the file used SF Pro and it wasn't installed on my machine.
I closed AE, installed SF Pro and when I tried to open the same file, it crashed/threw the same error.
I then disabled SF Pro from Font Book and re-opened the file. No problem.
So, I have absoutely no idea why a font family would cause AE to crash, but it did.

Update: I transfered the files to my other lap top (older macbook but still running current update of AE) and it opened fine.
Then uninstalled and re-installed AE on the problematic laptop... no dice. Still throwing that same error I attached the screenshot off. Very weird. It's opening as it should on the contractor's computer as well.
