After Effects not saving, Video Moemory Leaks Ongoing

So, Rendering in either Media Encoder, or After Effects on a majority of my compositions is still crashing sue to memory leaks issues.

I’m also having issues with projects not saving, not auto-saving and not saving as a copy, or saving as legacy versions… NBone of the above.

I’m gtonna start looking inbto all the potential class action lawsuits related to this ongoing issue in Adobe apps.

Current Mac OS X (26.5.1), Apple M1 Max MacBook Pro, 32GBs RAM.

So tired of this crap. I’ve been using AE regularly since 2003, the last few years have been a complete wash, and it’s compromised much of my work because of these ongoing issues. There are multiple tags related to the same issues. Instead of fixing what’s broken you’re pouring resources in AI crap no one wants, except for lazy people.

Hi @BRDy:

Sorry to hear you're having trouble — that sounds genuinely frustrating to deal with.

For context: I used to run a 16" MacBook Pro (M1 Max, 32GB/1TB) and had no issues with After Effects, Media Encoder, Premiere, Photoshop, and Illustrator. I'm now on an M4 Max (128GB/4TB) and everything runs great.

With issues as severe as yours, here's what I'd try, in order:

1. Check Full Disk Access and run diagnostics Make sure your Adobe apps have Full Disk Access, and run Apple Diagnostics to rule out a hardware issue.

2. If that doesn't resolve it, do a clean install First, confirm your Time Machine backup is current (or run one now). Then:

  1. Erase and do a clean install of macOS
  2. Install only Creative Cloud Desktop, After Effects, Premiere, and Media Encoder
  3. Test with some real work in those apps before installing anything else
  4. If that's solid, start adding back your third-party plugins/extensions one at a time, testing as you go
  5. Finally, install your other non-native apps and restore from Time Machine — everything except Applications

Hi BRDy,

That’s a long time using After Effects. Sorry to hear about the issues and frustration. I'd like to actually help on the two technical issues you've raised. I’d need more specifics to diagnose the issue. Could you share:

On the saving issues:

1. What exactly happens when you try to save? An error message, silent failure, hang, crash?
2. Where are you saving to (local drive, network drive, external SSD, cloud-synced folder like iCloud/Dropbox)?
3. Does it happen on every project, or specific ones?
4. If you see an error message, a screenshot of it would help.

On the memory crashes:

5. Does it happen on every project, or only certain ones (e.g., with 3D, EXR sequences, specific plugins)?
6. Are you using any third-party plugins? If yes, which ones?
7. The next time it crashes, please include your email address in the crash reporter when submitting. That lets us pull the exact crash log on our end.

With those details I can take this to the team properly.

Thanks,

Nishu

1 & 2. Nothing, it doesn’t Save, Save As or Save as a Copy. I tried saving as XML. I’ve tried all of these same actions to different drives and locations.

  1. Same projects, but they’re all short videos, I’ve worked on much longer with many layers and this is something I was able to make bread and butter on for a damn long time. Now, it feels anomalous.
  2. No error messages, nothing. The project stays open and just will not save and will not auto-save.

Memory crashes:

  1. Any project that is some small, piddly shit piece with like rendering a photo animatic or simple vector items and titling out.
  2. None aside from the ones bundled in Ae, Lumietri is the only one I’m using.
  3. I haven’t been able to get back into a full crash, it just happened while using Lumietri in Premier. I can’t trust either application and I’m well passed my deadlines.
