After Effects unable to preview anything in real-time

I'm an After Effects user of 20 years, and I have never experienced this one. Essentially I cannot preview anything! Simple text animations (preview set to 1/16 res) will not playback in real-time. Dropping an HD 30fps video into a new comp also doesn't playback in real-time, despite having no effects applied. I have a pretty decent machine - specs below. And yes, I've tried dumping the cache, restarting AE/my machine and all other obvious troubleshooting protocols.

OS Name Microsoft Windows 10 Pro Version 10.0.19045 Build 19045
11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-11700K @ 3.60GHz, 3600 Mhz, 8 Core(s), 16 Logical Processor(s)
Installed Physical Memory (RAM) 64,0 GB
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070

Adobe has been failing hard in recent years. After Effects is the only product that Adobe makes that no-one else does. Common devs of the world - make an alternate AE so we can kiss Adobe goodbye once and for all.

Hi @robert_nield,

Thanks for reporting this issue, and for your patience with our response. The inability to get a real-time preview with the UI spread across two monitors is not a known issue that I am aware of. Would you be able to give more details about your dual monitor setup? The following would be helpful for us to get a repro of the behavior:

  • The resolution of each monitor
  • How they're hooked up e.g. plugged into a discrete GPU or the motherboard
  • How the AE UI is arranged e.g. a single window spanning both monitors or split into separate panels

Thanks again for reporting this issue and for any further information you can provide,

- John, After Effects Engineering Team

00f, well, you know what to do.
put the bug on the "known bugs" pile.

I found out if I have After Effects open on 1 monitor only, it can playback in realtime - Splitting the UI across 2 monitors, for some reason, prevents realtime previews.

a new AE? coming right up~ https://www.left-angle.com/?page=95 (bout $1400 for a permanent lisence. that and resolve are about $1700 and both permanent)...on a more related and bug-centric note;
It crashes on open, so I can't test it myself, but according to https://community.adobe.com/t5/after-effects-discussions/ram-preview-not-in-real-time/td-p/8353465 you might have some luck hiding your libraries window (maybe putting it below the timeline in a tab or something? not sure what he means by "pulling"), if it's out. someone else also had some luck shrinking the window to like, a quarter of the screen.

I do agree with you that AE's performance has gone from "acceptable" to "piss poor" in just a little over a decade.... about how long has it been a subscription, again?
