Autosave crashes After Effects

I'm having a repeat, and incredibly annoying bug happen with the latest AE.

I'm working in a particularly complex project, plenty of EXR passes, Particular, optical flares, RSMB, etc going on. It takes a long time to render (no problem there, that is as expected). When I RAM preview comps in it and then hit escape to stop RAM previewing, as it has taken so long to RAM preview the Autosave function kicks in straight away. Instead of Autosaving the autosave box pops up, completely greyed out and then AE just hangs there for eternity, meaning that I have to kill AE via the Task Manager and restart it - losing both my project progress and RAM preview progress (that may have taken 20-60 minutes to do).

I don't particularly want to have to turn autosave off everytime I do a lengthy RAM preview.

Also, when rendering the composite out via the Render Queue I'm having it hang on me when I cancel it there, also meaning that I have to restart AE.

Please get this fixed!

Running Windows 10 Pro.

Hi Paul,

I have run through these steps, the DMP file is 116GB. Do you have storage that I can upload this and the other files to?

It still repeatedly happening, mostly when my RAM has filled up (not completely, as I leave 24GB of headroom in AE's settings). But, I am having AE hang when RAM isn't even full and A LOT of issues with it failing to render or preview anything.

Hi Seb,

This sounds really frustrating.

It's going to be a bit difficult to debug this — particularly since on Win, when you have to force quit via task manager, we don't get any crash logging from your session.

But we should be able to collect an Windows .DMP file and an After Effects Log.txt file from a session in which the hang has occured by these steps:

1. Launch AE.
2. Help Menu => Enable Logging.
3. Restart AE.
4. Perform the steps which cause the the hang to happen with your project.
5. When the hang occurs, bring up Task Manager.
6. Right click on the After Effects Process.
7. Create dump file.
8. Open File Location.
9. Copy the .DMP file to somewhere more convenient (for now).
10. Now kill AE.
11. Relaunch AE.
12. Help: Reveal Logging File.
13. Multiple directories and files may display. Find the After Effects Log.txt file and copy it to somewhere more convenient.

Now, you can open the Log.txt file in a text editor and paste it's contents back here (or direct message it to me).

For the .dmp, unfortunately you are going to need to make it available to me by a file transfer or shared directory (e.g. Dropbox), as there is no way to share it directly here in the Forums.

With these two pieces we may have a start on figuring out what the issue is.

Paul

Help Menu => Reveal Logging Files...
Find the "After Effects Log.txt" file and copy/paste the content back to this forum thread.
