Bug Report: "Use Comp Frame Number" Setting Not Saved in EXR (RGB + Alpha) Output Module Presets

Dear Adobe After Effects Team,

I am writing to report a persistent and long-standing bug in After Effects (on Windows) concerning the Render Queue's Output Module presets.

The Problem: When I create and save an Output Module preset for an OpenEXR sequence with the Channels set to "RGB + Alpha", the checkbox for "Use Comp Frame Number" does not save correctly.

Although I check this box and save the preset, after I close and restart After Effects, the preset reverts to having this option unchecked.

Key Detail: This bug appears to be specifically tied to the "RGB + Alpha" setting. If I save the exact same preset but with Channels set to "RGB" only, the "Use Comp Frame Number" setting saves perfectly and persists after restarting the application.

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Open After Effects (on Windows).

  2. Add any composition to the Render Queue.

  3. Click on the Output Module preset name (e.g., "Lossless").

  4. Set the Format to OpenEXR.

  5. In Format Options..., set Channels to RGB + Alpha. Click OK.

  6. Check the Use Comp Frame Number box.

  7. Save this configuration as a new Output Module preset (e.g., "EXR_Alpha_Seq").

  8. Completely close After Effects.

  9. Re-open After Effects.

  10. Add a new comp to the Render Queue and apply the "EXR_Alpha_Seq" preset.

  11. Click the preset name to inspect its settings.

Result: The Use Comp Frame Number box will be unchecked, even though it was saved as checked.

Impact: As a VFX artist, this bug is a significant workflow bottleneck. It forces me to manually re-check this box for every single EXR sequence render that requires an alpha channel, which is a constant source of potential human error. I have experienced this exact behavior on multiple different Windows PCs and across several versions of After Effects.

Thank you for your attention to this matter. I hope this long-standing issue can be addressed in a future update.

Sincerely,

Greetings and thank you for submitting such a clear bug with steps.

Unfortunately, I've just attempted to run through them to reproduce the bug several times — on both Win and Mac — and I'm not reproducing the issue.

At your step 11, I am definitely seeing the Use Comp Frame Number box as checked.

The only thing different I'm doing is that in your step 6 you say "Check the Use Comp Frame Number box." For me this box is checked by default for all of the AE installed Output Module Templates.

I also tried your steps starting from a custom Output Module that had the box unchecked (so I would execute your step 6) and I still have the box correctly checked in step 11.

Perhaps a screen capture of you running through how to reproduce the issue would point out what I'm not doing correctly?
