Bug - Roto Brush crashes AE in macOS Monterey

Bug

  • macOS Monterey 12.6.4
  • M1 Mac Studio
  • AE Version 23.3.0

Just updated a new AE version. Roto Brush has been working fine until now. I read new OS Ventura has problems, but now Roto Brush tool crashes After Effects in Monterey as well.

Dragging the selection cursor over the image crashes the app almost immediately.

You may be able to build a matte using short strokes and proceeding in very small increments, but the moment you try to preview the timeline After Effects crashes.

Selecting Roto Brush version or quality does not help.

Happens with every source format and codec, both internal and external SSDs.

Precomping does not help.

8 or 32 -bit, with or without Color Management.

Turning Metal GPU acceleration on or off has no effect either.

Please fix asap!

Woohoo!

Back in business. My Roto Brush works again in macOS Monterey with After Effects 23.4.0.

I can confirm. Roto Brush works in macOS Monterey with older AE Version 23.2.1 (Build 3).

Adobe, please.

Did some digging if I could find the missing crash logs. Where does After Effects store crash logs on Mac?

"Mac SSD > Users > ⁨[Your Username] > Library > Logs > Adobe⁩ > ⁨LogTransport⁩ > ⁨Archive⁩ > ..." There is only a Photoshop folder.

I can find some AE-related log folders in "Mac SSD > Users > ⁨[Your Username] > Library > Logs > Adobe..." but not sure if they are of any help?

Hello

Sorry about the delay in answering. My postings got lost somehow.

When After Effects crashes there is no crash log - Not in Adobe or macOS logs. AE just closes without any warning. Is there a way to force the log?

Proceeding with extreme caution, I was able to make one roto matte and freeze it. But the tool is very unreliable at the moment.
I have a project coming where I will need a lot of roto mattes. My only option seems to be downgrading AE to a previous version.

Hi.

This is just a test. It seems I am not able to reply. My postings are not visible (to me at least).

Ah. Now they are...

JohnColombo

I have tried to post you twice concerning the crash logs. Both times my messages got lost somewhere. Please let me know if you see them.

Thanks

Hi @Rocketbottle,

Thank you for reporting this issue. When After Effects crashes, does the Crash Reporter dialog show up for you to submit the crash report? The issue you are reporting does seems like it might be different than the issue on macOS Ventura, but we would need to see a crash report to know for sure.

Thanks for reporting this issue and for any further information you can provide,
