Fresh issues in fresh 25.4.0 release

Hello from a  macOS 15.6, Apple M3 Max 96Go. After the black frames issues in the 25.3 release, quickly fixed, I think there is a new issue in the early 25.4.0 :

I notice a very strong slowdown in the composition refresh after a certain amount of time working :

  • I use only standards effects
  • It happen even if the 'file.aep' is not so big (13 Mo)
  • It happen in simple HD comps (with some sub comps up to 3000x3000 pix max)
  • when it happen in the current working comp, all the comps in the project are affected (even if not related to the working comp)
  • Save, quit, reopen AeFx makes everything run smoothly again (responsive and fast as it should be)
  • But after a while, AeFx get nowhere fast again
  • When I try first to solve the slowdown by purging all memory and disk cache, I noticed that the media cache was strangely light (far from the maximum of 360 Go I allowed to AeFx (and I have more of 1 To free on my 'HD'))

It's not as obvious as a visible bug, but it's very annoying. My guess is that something goes wrong with the cache management. I hope it will be fixed soon, as for now I have to quite and relaunch every 30mn, and sometimes more often.

Stay strong and have a good day 8^)

Sounds good, I'll be around if you post back.

And to be clear, I wasn't suggesting you clear the cache to increase performance, it was so the Composition Profiler gives you an accurate read for how long it takes to render a single frame. If you have cached layers, the number it reports doesn't tell you how long it took to render the frame from scratch.

Too often people clear the cache as a performance issue, and while it can definitely fix issues, it can also slow things down even more. With the introduction of High Performance Preview Playback this year, we can now leverage your disk cache in a way that wasn't possible before. This means that more layers can get cached and offloaded to disk, then pulled back into RAM when you need them, i.e. previews can be significantly faster and longer. Clearing the cache wipes out this benefit.

Thanks too. I rarely think to use the Composition Profiler. It's a good idea.

As for the comparison between Ae24 and Ae25, since I have to work on a different project, I will start in Ae25 and I will compare the rendering times between Ae25 and Ae24 if I need to return to Ae24 again, and I'll send it here.

However, clearing the cache is not enough in my case. Only restarting AeFx solves the problem.

Thanks for that info. I see from the Composition Profiler at the bottom that you have a particularly heavy frame rendering time. If you show the Render Time column in the Timeline, you can start to profile which comp, layer, or effects are contributing to your render times. Check out this article to read how the feature works: https://helpx.adobe.com/after-effects/using/composition-profiler.html

If you reveal this column, purge the cache and then render a clean frame, do the times differ much between AE 24 and AE 25? In this case, purging the cache is necessary because that render time takes cached layers into account.

Also, are you able to collect and send this project to me? If so, it wouldn't be shared outside of the AE team, but it could help us troubleshoot the issue.

Hi @David.Arbor ,

you're welcome (but it's also in my interest ;^).

  • Yep, any of the 3 projects I worked for this last week (but they are very similar).
  • Only in 2D (with no motion blur except a light CC Force Motion Blur used only when rendering).
  • Without any third-party tools (except for a few scripts used from time to time to facilitate keyframing).

info: I was able to easily make copies of my projects to open them in version 2024 of AeFx (24.6.8), in which the refresh rate is correct and stable over time (and I even have the impression that the rendering times are faster).

Hi @ALPIN,

Thanks for the report and the info. It sounds like this is happening in every project? Is this with the Classic 3D or Advanced 3D engine? Or are you only working with 2D layers?

Can you please post a full-ui screenshot of your workspace? There are some third-party tools that do what's called "polling" which is a way to update their tool based on the clicks you're making (think of a third-party panel that shows you properties of a selected layer). This can often lead to gradual performance hits like what you're describing, but without more detail, it's impossible to say what the true cause is.
