Issue switching between display adapters for After Effects, Blender, and brightness controls
Hello,
This is my laptop info:
Victus HP 16-r1xxx
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070
Windows 11 Pro 24H2
Aftereffects v25.5
Blender v4.3
I initially had a problem with After Effects where the Composition panel was completely black — I couldn’t see anything from my composition. I managed to fix it using the following steps:
Issue: The Composition panel does not render visual content on Windows devices with both an Intel integrated GPU and an NVIDIA graphics card.
Solution I applied:
Close After Effects.
Open Device Manager (Win + R → devmgmt.msc).
Expand Display adapters and right-click Intel UHD Graphics.
Select Update driver → Browse my computer for drivers.
Select Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer and choose Microsoft Basic Display Adapter.
Complete the update wizard until “Windows has successfully updated your drivers” appears.
Restart After Effects.
This solved the black preview issue in After Effects.
However, after doing this I ran into two new problems:
When I tried to open Blender, I got this error:
“A graphics card and driver with support for OpenGL 4.3 or higher is required. Installing the latest driver for your graphics card might resolve this.”
But my NVIDIA driver was already updated. The brightness slider on Windows completely disappeared, and I couldn’t adjust brightness from anywhere.
Since both problems clearly came from switching to the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, I had to revert back by doing this:
Device Manager → Display adapters → Right-click Microsoft Basic Display Adapter → Uninstall device → Action → Scan for hardware changes.
This restored Blender and brightness control.
My question is:
Is there any way to avoid constantly switching between display adapters — one setup that allows After Effects to work properly and still lets me use Blender and control brightness?
Thank you!
