Issues with versions 24.6 and above and importing a layered Illustrator file as a comp

When working on a Windows 11 Enterprise platform on a Dell Precision 7680 13th Gen core i9-13950HX, 2200 Mhz, 24 core, 64 GB RAM with an RTX 5000 Ada, After Effects hangs up when importing a layered .ai file as a comp in versions 24.6 and above. In version 24.5 it works, and on a Mac Book Pro (m1 chip 2019) the latest version (25.1) it works as well.

My process:

1. Open a new project in AE

2. Choose File--Import--file

3. Select my layered .ai Illustrator file (latest version) and for when Import kind I select composition and keep defaut Document size.

4. AE continues to show the spinning wheel and won't open the file on versions later than 24.6.

Normally, AE is able to import a layered .ai file as a comp.

I have no 3rd party plug-ins, and do not install with Cinema 4D capabilities since I do not sue the program.

Apologies, I didn't check the Adobe community forum page.

When I tried to attach the illustrator file, I got a message saying illustrator files are not supported as attachments. I tried zipping the file as well but didn't work.

Please send me an email to this address. I will zip and attach it to a reply email.

Thanks very much for your patience....

Hi Alice, I sent you a private message yesterday after posting here. I thought you would have gotten an email, but if not, you should see an "envelope" icon at the top-right of the forums (two to the left of your profile icon). Click that and you should see a private message from me. If not, I can email you at the address associated with your Adobe ID.

Hi David,
I haven't yet received a message from you, so just checking in to see if you still want my layered Illustrator file to try and reproduce the issue I am having in After Effects.

Many thanks,
Alice C. Kitterman

Absolutely, this will stay completely internal and will only be shared with an engineer if I can repro the issue. I'll message you privately.

Edit: As for the public beta, it's actually really easy to install.

  1. Open the Creative Cloud desktop app.
  2. Navigate to the Apps tab from the left sidebar.
  3. At the top, just to the right of All Apps is a button for Beta.
  4. Inside the Beta section you'll see After Effects. It will also install Media Encoder beta.

What's great about the public beta is that you can install it alongside the release version (purple icon) without overwriting your preferences. You can switch back and forth between the public beta since they're both currently the same major verion (25.x). You'll notice in the About screen that the beta is now on 25.3 while the release version is on 25.1, so there might be a fix that has already been implemented.

Dear David,
Thanks for your quick reply. Yes, I can send you my layered .ai file, but as it contains unreleased info, PLEASE do not share this file with anyone.

Please advise me on how to send this to you via DM.

Also, please tell me how to test with the latest public beta version. I am ignorant as to how to do this.

Thank you,
Alice C. Kitterman

Hi there @alice_7271 ,

Sorry to hear you're having issues, but thank you for the detailed info. Are you able to send me this Illustrator file via DM? I'd love to take a look at it, and if I can reproduce the issue on my end, one of our engineers should be able to sort it out.

Also, have you tried this file in the latest public beta?

Thanks,
