Laggy Typing in After Effects is getting worse.

I've had issues in the past with typing and new characters not appearing when you type until you perform another action. There was an active User Voice post for this. I even got contacted by After Effects staff and submitted videos for them.

Now, with the latest updates, the issue is worse.

The 'Character' panel now lags. Every time I select a new text box, the previous Character properties remain visible. If I make a change, it actually updates the selected text to whatever the Character panel shows. This means that every time I select type, I have to then click a couple more times in the text box to ensire the Character panel actually updates.

Macbook Pro 16" Intel, macOS Monterey 12.6

After Effects Version 23.0.0 (Build 59)

Cache is clean, SSD has 300GB free. Ram is underutilised.
GPU is anaemic but hey, it's an Intel Mac. Go figure.

Hey @JohnColombo17100380 ,

It was in this thread (AE UI Lag) that Jenkmeister mentioned that this had been acknowleged and was being worked on.

I also uploaded another video here (although I've since removed off my Google Drive - I can't host all these adobe videos forever!)

https://community.adobe.com/t5/after-effects-bugs/interface-is-slow-and-laggy/idc-p/13752017/page/9#M3685

I'm very surprised you guys haven't been able to reproduce. I jump around a lot of different machines as well as work on two primary machines, and I seem to experience this on every single one (albeit, all Mac machines ranging from 2017 iMacs to 2019 Macbook Pros).

Hi @Rob217717683hsl,

No, we have not been able to reproduce the lag on our systems, to the best of my knowledge. Was that shared elsewhere?

There is work in progress involving our type engine (details here) but without a repro on our end, I can't say for sure if it will affect the issue you're seeing. As I mentioned, please install and give the latest Beta builds a try if you can, and let us know if you encounter the same lag as in the release version. This would help us to narrow down the conditions in which you are seeing the lag and possibly determine if it is related to a typeface, a preference, or something else.

Cheers,

Hey John,

It seems you guys are now aware/have been able to reproduce typing issues in AE and are working on it?

Hi @Rob217717683hsl,

Sorry to hear you're still experiencing this lag and other UI performance issues. Thank you for letting us know that SF Pro is not the culprit here. We unfortunately aren't able to reproduce the UI lag you're describing in order to diagnose a cause.

If possible, would you be able to install the latest After Effects (Beta) build from the Beta app section of the Creative Cloud app? The Beta build has a new Safe Mode option to start with temporary default preferences and without third-party plug-ins. It would be helpful to know if you still experience the same lag in Safe Mode in the Beta build.

Thanks again for any further info,

- John, After Effects Engineering Team

Hi John,

This is still an issue. Video here:

laggy typing in AE.mov

Just to reitterare, you can see the blank spaces where characters should be, but don't appear until you hit another character.

To be perfectly honest, the interface is slow in general.

Also to answer your question, no I don't have SF Pro installed.

I can't remember, but I've already tested this behaviour with a number of fonts, included those installed by default in MacOS, and installed with other Creative Cloud applications and I can't find any performance improvement by changing font.

In fact, I've noticed this issue get worse.

One issue is that After Effects often doesn't update the visual when you make one change, then it updates when you make the second change.

For example, type one letter and you don't see it. Type two letters and you see the first letter plus the second letter. This is on top of issues that have cropped up since chatting to support initially, such as the fact that the Character panel now also lags and doesn't update the values of the text you've selected until you click to edit somewhere in the character panel twice.

Hi @Rob217717683hsl,

Thank you for reporting this issue. Do you recall who you were in contact with previously regarding this issue?

We know of a number of typefaces that can cause the kind of lag you are describing, both when typing and when interacting with the Character panel. A commonly-installed one is SF Pro. Do you have this typeface installed? If so, see if uninstalling that typeface improves the responsiveness. If not, I would recommend using "Deactivate all fonts not in use" in the Creative Cloud app and see if there is any change in responsiveness.

We are actively working on improving the performance of After Effects with any currently-problematic typefaces.

Thanks again for reporting this issue and for any further information you can provide,

- John, After Effects Engineering Team

I can't upvote this, but 100% agree. Typing in After Effects is horrid.
