Mesh Warp + arrows

Summary of the problem: When a layer has the Mesh Warp effect applied, using arrow keys moves individual mesh points instead of moving the entire layer, even when the effect is not actively selected in the Effect Controls panel. This overrides the expected default behavior of arrow keys moving the entire layer.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Create or select any layer in the timeline
  2. Apply Effect > Distort > Mesh Warp to the layer
  3. Click to select the layer in the timeline (not in the Effect Controls)
  4. Press any arrow key (up, down, left, right) on the keyboard

What should have happened: The entire layer should move 1 pixel in the direction of the arrow key pressed (or 10 pixels with Shift held), which is the standard behavior for selected layers in After Effects.

What actually happened: Individual mesh warp points move instead of the entire layer, making it impossible to use arrow keys for precise layer positioning once Mesh Warp is applied.

Additional information: This happens regardless of whether the Mesh Warp effect is selected in the Effect Controls panel. The issue persists even when working with other properties of the layer. This has been the behavior for multiple versions and significantly disrupts the normal positioning workflow.

Hardware specs and operating system: Windows 11

This needs to be addressed. Arrow keys should only control mesh points when the Mesh Warp effect is actively selected or when directly manipulating the mesh in the composition window.
Thanks!

Ok I had a check, and it can be re-created by doing the following.

- apply the Mesh Warp effect to a layer.

- select the effect under Effect Controls

- then de-select the effect by clicking in the empty space under the effect in the effect controls window.

- then move the arrows up down left right. you see the effect is instantly activated again, while the expected behaviour should be that now the layer moves to left and right..

Hey there! Thanks for reaching out. I just tried the steps you shared. It looks like the arrow keys don’t move the Mesh Warp unless I have a point selected. If no point is selected but the Mesh Warp effect is highlighted in the Effect Controls panel, the arrow keys don’t do anything. When I have the layer selected and not the effect, it just moves the layers. How about trying to run After Effects in Safe Mode and see if that helps?

Let me know how it goes!

Thanks,
Nishu
