OCIO Viewport display is very unreliable after update.
I'm genuinely losing my patience with After Effects breaking fundamental functionality for absolutely no goddamn reason.
I'm working on a VFX project using an OCIO color management workflow, and After Effects is randomly deciding to clamp the values of one of my layers in the viewport. Sometimes it displays correctly, and sometimes the values appear to be clamped to a maximum of 1.
The most frustrating part is that this isn't even consistent.
If I perform practically any action that refreshes the viewport, the image suddenly displays correctly again. But the moment I move the timeline, it can immediately go back to displaying the broken, clamped version.
What's even more ridiculous is the difference in behavior depending on playback:
-
If I manually scrub through the timeline and allow frames to load individually, everything displays correctly.
-
If I let After Effects cache the composition and play it back using NUM0 or Spacebar, it loads and displays the completely broken/clamped version instead.
So apparently the same frames can display correctly or incorrectly depending entirely on how After Effects decides to load them.
This is happening specifically in an OCIO color-managed workflow, and the issue appears to be related to After Effects incorrectly clamping color values in the viewport/cached playback pipeline.
How is this even acceptable? Color management is not some obscure experimental feature—this is fundamental functionality, especially for VFX workflows dealing with HDR and values outside the 0–1 range. Randomly changing how footage is interpreted depending on whether I scrub manually or use RAM preview makes the software completely unreliable.
The fact that I can literally fix the image by refreshing the viewport, only for it to immediately break again when playing the timeline, makes this feel like an extremely obvious caching or viewport bug.
Please investigate this properly. I need to know:
-
Why values are being randomly clamped during cached playback.
-
Why manually loading frames produces a different result from RAM preview.
-
Why refreshing the viewport temporarily fixes the issue.
-
Whether this is a known OCIO/color management bug in the current version of After Effects.
-
Whether there is any actual workaround besides constantly fighting the software to display the image correctly.
It's incredibly frustrating to have a professional VFX workflow interrupted by basic viewport functionality behaving inconsistently. I should not have to manually scrub frame-by-frame just to make sure After Effects isn't randomly destroying the color values of my footage.
Please fix this.
