@jenkmeister17177426 So I checked some other tools and this does happen on Clone stamp and possibly some other cases as well. So perhaps it is "by design" but it was never noticed until now because Pen Tool never opened any new panels.

But do have a chat with the team because it's not clear what causes this. Most users would assume it's a bug. I've been using AE for well over 10 years now and even I didn't know what causes this. I would be fine if it happens only 1st time I use the tool but every time I move the view... It's a bit annoying.

The Middle Click to move the area is treating that click in a way that fires the auto-open. While you know the PP is open, when a panel goes maximized, AE no longer treats the PP as being open which is why it continues to throw you back out of the maximized state.

I've asked the PP team to take a look at this situation and see if they can adjust so that auto-open isn't triggering when a single panel is maximized or something similar to that.

@jenkmeister17177426 I saw that in another similar post. The thing is I already have the properties panel open, so no new panel is being opened, everything stays the same, and it happens whenever I move the view when it's maximized while the pen tool is active.

Unchecking it is more of a workaround. It "fixes" it but if the properties panel is already open, or no new panels are being opened then it shouldn't remove me from maximized view every time.

Look for the checkbox shown below in the toolbar. If that is enabled, AE is likely trying to bring up the Properties Panel which will take you out of full-screen mode.
