Replace images with alt pressing

Thanks for the question and welcome to the forum. I have an idea as to what is going on:

When Alt-dragging an image from the Project panel onto a layer in the Comp panel to replace it, make sure the target layer is first selected in the timeline and not locked. If it doesn't replace, try the shortcut Ctrl+Alt+/ (Cmd+Option+/ on Mac) after selecting both layers to swap them reliably.

Parent-link setups can cause issues because replacing a layer may disrupt parenting relationships—temporarily disable parenting before replacing and re-enable afterward to avoid problems. Also, ensure the replacement image size/aspect ratio matches to prevent scaling issues. This method keeps all animations and keyframes intact during replacement.
