Rotobrush 2 and refinement problems (plus general AE performance issues)

Hi,
I've just come off a lengthy chat and screenshare with Adobe Support (transcript attached).
My issue is unresolved - they told me to wait for the next patch, and recommended I post the issue here.

I have a Mac Studio M1 32GB running Ventura 13.2.1
Media cache is on an external SSD.
Adobe agent confirmed my system is fine and AE should work normally.

Since getting the new mac and latest AE (23.2.1 - Build 3) I have had numerous preview and rendering lag & crash problems. The latest issue is when I use the rotobrush - refinement brush.

I'm trying to refine the selection around a model's hair. When I do this using the refinment brush, and select "BEST", AE tells me it cannot process this and I have to revert to standard. The quality of the hair in Standard is terrible.

Periodically, AE tells me to revery from rotobrush 2 to classic.
I tried running AE 2022 to try and achieve the refinement, and it crashed.

There are many people having issues with AE and the new M1 mac. There's clearly an issue.
Please can you help? Thank you

Hi John,
Thanks very much for your reply and for explaining things. I look forward to the rotobrush best mode availability.
Regarding crashes and lagging, I will put these on here and submit reports from now on.

Thanks again,
Andrew

Hi @andrewg59094214,

Thank you for reporting these issues. It is somewhat difficult to address them as a whole, so I'll attempt to address each one individually.

Currently, the Best mode of Roto Brush 2 is not compatible with macOS 13. The details are listed on the Known Issues page: https://community.adobe.com/t5/after-effects-bugs/after-effect-crashes-mac-os-ventura-rotobrush/idc-p/13482529. We are working with Apple to get this fixed in a future version of After Effects and/or macOS.

The Refine Edge tool is not affected by the Quality option of Roto Brush 2—they are separate processes. If possible, please post a collected project with a portion of your footage so we can see the result you're getting and recommend what you might do to improve it.

For the numerous preview and rendering lag problems, could you offer more information on the content of your projects, as well as any third-party plug-ins or panels that you have installed? We are not seeing these kinds of lagging, crashing issues on our test systems that match your specs, but our machines are also not running with all the third-party extensions that you may be or using the same types of footage.

For the crashes you have encountered, have you been shown the Crash Reporter dialog and submitted the crash reports with your email? These reports are critical for us to see what may be going wrong, so please submit them if you are able to.

Thanks for reporting this issue and for any further information you can provide,

- John, After Effects Engineering Team
