Shape layer with masked Effect repeatable crash condition

  • Issue - Shape Layer with Transform Effect using layer mask as effect mask – adjusting keyframes crashes AE.
  • Steps to reproduce - Add a mask to a shape layer (created by Overlord in my case) using Layer>Mask>New Mask, add a Transform Effect, add position keyframes so the contents of the Shape layer are outside the mask and animate to the original position. Use the mask as an Effect mask. Notice that mask is not masking on first frame but otherwise appears to animate into position. Adjust first position keyframe to crash After Effects.
  • Expected result - Shape layer contents should move via the Transform Effect.
  • Actual result -  After Effects crashes.
  • Screen recording – in safe mode and slightly different order of process to reproduce

  • Adobe After Effects version After Efects Beta 26.2.0 Build 13
  • Operating system - macOS Sequoia 15.6.1 (24G90) on Macbook M1 Pro
  • GPU driver version (Windows only) - If you're on Windows, please let us know what version of the video card (GPU) driver you are using.
  • Video format - If your issue is related to video playback or export, please let us know what format the video is in. Ideally, share with us a sample video.
  • Comparative information helps us understand more about when the issue occurs:
    • Does it affect all projects or only some projects? Unsure
    • Does it affect new projects? Yes
    • When did the problem begin? – Today. Been using this method with the same project (maybe one week old).

Thank you for reporting this, @notbyhalf! We are able to reproduce this crash as well, though thankfully only in the Beta version of After Effects. We are actively investigating a fix.

Thanks again,
