Text direction issue

It appears there's a bug in the text direction feature after recent changes. When attempting to edit an older text object in a project, it unexpectedly writes from right to left, despite the text direction being set to left to right. Interestingly, duplicating the text layer resolves the issue, and it writes in the correct direction. I've provided a reference video for clarification. Could you please investigate this matter on your end? We've received lot of reports from our customers who utilize our animated text library product, all experiencing this issue.

Hi @JohnColombo17100380 ,

I can confirm that I didn't get this problem with the latest beta version.

Hi all,

A fix for this issue will be available in After Effects (Beta) build 24.4.0.39 and later. Please download the Beta build from the Creative Cloud app when it becomes available and let us know if you are finding the direction issue fixed for you as well, or if you continue to run into any related issues.

Thanks again for the reports,

- John, After Effects Engineering Team

I've been running into the same issue in 24. Seems to happen when the Source Text is used in essential properties and you change the text the standard way (double clicking the text layer). If I update the text via the essential graphics palette it works fine. When I open the project in 23 I don't get the issue.

Hi @MotionApe,

Thank you, we can definitely see the issue occurring in the video. Would you be able to share a project with us in the buggy state? That would be hugely helpful in our investigation of the bug.

Thanks again,

- John, After Effects Engineering Team

Hi Douglas,

Thank you for your response.

  • What AE version? Version 24.2.1 (Build 2)
  • What is the name of your animated text library product? https://www.motionape.com/mopack/
  • What platform(s) is it failing on? Windows 10
  • What was the last version it worked on? Any version earlier than 24.2.1
  • When you say "older text object" can you be more specific? Older project? Old text engine? etc. A text layer that is not created on the 24.2.1 version
  • You say that duplicating "solves" the problem - does it only solve it on the new layer, or also the original layer? On the new layer. Customers need to work on the original layer
  • Does your product use Scripting and/or Expressions? It uses expressions but I deleted to everything to check it, it didn't help
  • Do you have other clues you an provide us? I think it's related to Essential Graphics. I have found the problem. The original layers were placed in Essential Graphics. When I remove the source, it works as intended. It explains how it works when I duplicate it. Here's another video you can watch.
