Typing Text in AE Buggy

This has been something that's been very frustrating lately. Every time I use After Effects type, it fails to recognize 30% of the characters. For example if I type "TRAIN," it will only recognize a few characters such as "TRN"

This has been going on in the past release or so. Just plain type in a blank composition.

Is anyone else dealing with this?

@Rob217717683hsl Thanks for submitting those screen recordings. Do you remember who you were in contact with? I had not seen the report you are mentioning from UserVoice and it doesn't appear to have met the threshold for being migrated here to the Adobe Community.

Cheers,

@sanagustin What is the OS version and spec on this system where you are experiencing this issue?

Hi @sanagustin & @Rob217717683hsl,

Thank you both for reporting this issue. We are able to reproduce it as well, though we've found it is somewhat system-dependent. For instance, on Intel Macs, we've found that having certain typefaces installed, like Apple SF Pro, can cause major slowdowns with Text layers and even the whole application. On Windows, selecting a variable typeface like Bahnschrift Regular can cause similar performance issues. We're aware of and investigating fixes for these cases, as well as additional different cases on M1 Macs.

As we're investigating, it would be helpful if either of you could share screen recordings of how this issue manifests for you, as well as what typefaces are installed when you encounter the issue. Some third-party panels that consuming resources can almost contribute, so please list any of those as well.

Thanks for reporting this issue and for any further information you can provide,

- John, After Effects Engineering Team

Yep. Typing in After Effects is awful.

I've had issues in the past with typing and new characters not appearing when you type until you perform another action. There was an active User Voice post for this. I even got contacted by After Effects staff and submitted videos for them.

Now, with the latest updates, the issue is worse.

The 'Character' panel now lags. Every time I select a new text box, the previous Character properties remain visible. If I make a change, it actually updates the selected text to whatever the Character panel shows. This means that every time I select type, I have to then click a couple more times in the text box to ensire the Character panel actually updates.

Macbook Pro 16" Intel, macOS Monterey 12.6

After Effects Version 23.0.0 (Build 59)

Cache is clean, SSD has 300GB free. Ram is underutilised.
GPU is anaemic but hey, it's an Intel Mac. Go figure.
