Unable to save AE project in folders with special characters

Hello everyone,

I'll report the issue first, and the troubleshooting that brought me to it in second place.

There is a problem when you try to save a new AE Project into folders that have special characters. I work for a german company so it's not unusual that I have to work with folders with Ä, Ö and Ü. Needless to say I've been working on such folders for years now and never had a problem.

Since I updated to Adobe CC 2023 and macOS Ventura I wasn't able to save NEW AE projects. If the project was old I could edit it, I received some errors though (3 :: 0) and (26 :: 32) but I could work on it.

I spent some days trying to figure out where the problem was. At first, I try to save it in another drive and I didn't get any errors, so I thought it was the drive. I replaced the drive, copied everything and tried to save the project again. I repaired permissions, updated the system permissions for AE, formatted the drive, etc. and nothing worked. So at the end I decided to just rename the one folder I was working on replacing the special characters and problem was gone.

System specs are:

MacBook 16" 2021 - M1 Max 10core - 32 gpu cores - 32GB RAM

macOS Ventura

How is the Samsung SSD drive formatted?  Fat32, ExFAT, NTFS, HFS, HFS+, APFS?

You may need to reformat to use special characters.

Hi @JohnColombo17100380.

Thanks for your reply. I'm using macOS Ventura (13.0.1) in English and the latest (23.1 - Build 83) AE Version. Further information is that I'm using an external SSD from Samsung, model T7. I created a new folder with special characters and tried to reproduce the error and it happened indeed: I wasn't able to save the project onto that folder. I've now seen there is a new macOS Version (13.1) I haven't installed yet, so I'll install that and try to see if the problem persists.

Hi @Joseph_AE_88,

Thank you for reporting this issue and for the detail you've provided.

What version of After Effects are you using when you experience the error when saving projects to folders with special characters? In a quick test with After Effects 23.1 on macOS 13.0, I didn't experience an error when saving a project to a folder that had special characters in the name, but there may be another factor that isn't present on my system. It's also possible that this is fixed in 23.1 if you are using 23.0.

Additionally, what language is After Effects itself using, and what language is the OS set to use? This could be a contributing factor as well.

Thanks for reporting this issue and for any further information you can provide,
